Dress still not quite right…cleavage/armpit squeeze

Care, on May 31, 2022 at 12:27 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 5

Hi all,
My wedding is Aug. 13, and my dress is currently with the seamstress for its second round of alterations (I don't see it again until July 3). I love this dress, but it's still not quite right. I don't want to be a "sexy" bride, I want to be elegant and graceful. But when I show people photos of my dress, the first thing they always say is "Va va voom, look at those BOOBS!" Or "Wow, so SEXY!" I don't know why I didn't realize this when I first bought the dress — probably party because my mom loved it so much, and because I didn't take enough pictures that day. The cleavage and structured top also makes me look bigger than I am in general (I'm 5'2", 120 lbs, 34D). I already added the extra petal fabric to cover the deep V so you wouldn't see the underside of my breasts. I'm wondering if they could remove the push-up cups and replace them with something flatter? (which will cost extra because in earlier rounds of alterations they sewed the cups more securely into the dress. And honestly, at this point I don't know if there's time to make a change like that). I never, ever wear push-up bras. Also, in altering the dress to make it fit my shorter frame (I'm 5'2"), they hiked the straps up and I'm feeling like it's now pinching my armpits and causing that armpit/side boob squeeze. They said after the next round of alterations that may resolve itself (since it was also pinned right at the armpit at the time), but if it's still an issue they can do another fix. I'm just worried that if I have more changes after the July 3 appointment, I'm kind of running out of time... Also: I'm having a hard time knowing how I feel about the dress and what alterations I want during the moment of the fitting — it becomes more clear once I have time to really look at photos after the appointment, which has left me feeling insecure after each visit. They just move so fast and seem to tell you exactly what you need to have done, and I just go with it and then end up dwelling on it later. Anyone else? Thank you for any advice/commiserating! Yes, I had a similar situation. While I was at my first alterations appointment, something was bothering me but I didn't quite know what it was. I went to my car and compared pictures to when I said yes to the dress to figure out what it was. I ended going back in to talk to them about it and then again two days later to adjust the hem. Don't be afraid to take your time at the appointment to assess your dress or go back in if you're not 100% happy. I don't think taking cups out should be a big deal, and that combined with the alterations they are currently working on may fix the problem.

Also for timeline reference, I went back a month out from my wedding and they are doing another round of alterations and will have my dress back 2.5 weeks prior to my wedding (or time for more alterations, although I don't think they will be needed). So I do think you'd have time for another round of alterations if needed when you go back July 3rd.

Taking out the push up cups shouldn't be too big of a task, and that would probably cut down on the cleavage. Alterations usually require a few rounds to get everything exactly right, so I'd see how it sits/ feels at your next appointment if they say the armpit issue will resolve itself. I agree with Kasey that going back a few days later to discuss anything is perfectly fine as well. If there are any issues at your next appointment you still have enough time to get anything turned around in time.

Hi! I don’t think that dress is at all what you’re friends are describing. I think it is classy and beautiful and timeless and elegant. It’s the way you carry yourself... you in the dress is very tasteful. Sexy is not what comes to mind! I wonder if it’s the first time they’re seeing your cleavage so they’re saying that?

As far as second guessing the seamstress with the straps and armpit issue, I would say tell them exactly your worries and trust that it will be beautiful when finished. I was freaking out at my second to last fitting because I thought the dress was going to be too short and too tight because... when I tried it on it was too short and too tight, and then when it was finished and ready to Be picked up, it was magically longer and fit perfectly?!

But you’re totally normal to worry and be nervous! Best of luck and again, i think you look beautiful!!

Also I would consider not removing the push-up cups because it might give the impression of saggy boobs.

I had a similar issue and it was because my boobs were pushing together and creating too much cleavage which I didn’t care for. I got GoodLines tape and positioned them so less cleavage and this solved it for me. The cut of my dress was very similar to yours and I am close in size to you.
