Dress sizing, once again...

Dawn, on March 29, 2019 at 2:35 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 11

Hey gals. Looking for some input here just for conversation sake. I already have my dress by Oleg Cassini. By the Oleg Cassini size chart, I'm an 8 and that is what I ordered. I'm nervous because there's a lot of talk about dresses being so crazy big and gals having to order like 4 sizes larger than their street size. (I'm not really that nervous because I know that alterations can be a lifesaver if need be Smiley smile) So, I went onto the David's Bridal site and checked several designers sizing. You choose a dress and under the size to order, there's a size chart. They are all the same?! Doesn't matter if it's Melissa Sweet, Vera Wang, Galina, etc. But if you find the actual designer's size chart elsewhere, the "8" measurements are a 4 or 6. It got me scratching my head. When I was measured, she told me between a size 8 and 10. She grabbed me a lot of 10's and some were snug, some were loose. I understand that the "sample size" isn't truly what you're given to try due to stretching and such. So, what's the deal? I totally get vanity sizing, trust me Smiley smile, I shop at Maurices for EVERYTHING, I am almost always a size 7/8 in jeans, and now my dress is gonna be a size 8. Pretty accurate, right? I'm so confused! Do different designers sizes run differently or not? Is it purely a David's Bridal thing?...You order an 8, 10, 12 and the cuts are all the same? Aaaand...go!

My dress is made by an Australian designer, so the sizing is crazy on top of the normal dress sizing. I had to order a 22 when I'm a street 12. My salon had specific size guides for each designer, so that's what we went with. I would go with what you find on the designer's website

Interesting! My 8 would have been an 12 in australian. Regarding what to go with on the designers site...I've heard some ladies doing it that way and then the dress is super big. ??Whew!...thank goodness I got the size I did if the sizing on the designers site is really what I'm getting. Did you go to David's?

An another note...David's has size charts taped to their clip boards. I peeked when she was comparing my measurements to the chart (s). She kept referring to the second one down, and there were 4.

I’m usually an 18 and they ordered me a 22 because of the bust size

Aha! That's one thing I forgot about. They always get the size of dress that matches your largest measurement. I am not well endowed in that area and my dress is an A-line, so my largest measurement (hips) are not really a factor.

If it helps, try on your dress at the store as soon as it comes in and if it is way off they can reorder as a rush for a different size. Also I got the size my stylist suggested and it is just barely too loose (expected because I have wide hips and large chest.

Lol...I'm giggling, cuz I tried a 6 on at the store. It zipped, but I had back boob crack. She automatically ordered the 8. I knew there was a 10 floating around in the store but another bride had it. I was originally there on March 3. This last Monday I went back in to try the 10 just for good measure and it had sold! But, she had a 12. I knew it was going to be too big, but I wanted to try it anyway. Soooo, to the point...she said the dress is no longer being made, so if by chance it doesn't fit, either I'm going on a diet or we hit the alterations. Lol!

I've heard that David's is more true to size than other designers. I wore a Stella York dress and I'm normally a 0/2 and my dress was a 6. It fit almost perfectly and was just a bit big in the shoulders/back and waist.

All of the samples I tried on were way too big for me and had to be clamped. I think the smallest sample I tried on was a 10? That is pretty standard though.

Ok, so David's DOES have it's own sizing. These designer dresses are specifically made for David's (regardless of what you find on the actual designers measurement/fit size guide) and that's why the measurements are all the same. I think I'm wrapping my head around this now. I could very well buy an Oleg Cassini dress outside of David's Bridal and I might actually have to buy a 12 when my street size is an 8. Thanks!!

I would definetly recommend going with the larger size because it is much easier to have a dress altered smaller but some dresses are impossible to alter larger

Totally Agree! I did some reading up on the alterations that can and can't be done with side seams and boning, etc. When I went back in to try the 12, I discovered that my dress does have a side seam to let out, and I inquired about it. She assured me there would be a little to work with. I'm really only worried about the tummy area. My chest is not large (actually, she measured me smaller than I thought, sad). My tummy comes in about an inch possibly too thick for what I'm getting. We'll see!
