Dress sizing is 4 sizes off from waist to hip!!!

Chelsea, on May 4, 2021 at 5:01 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 1 3
After 2 years I have finally found a dress for my wedding this October (10/30/21) and when they measured my hips today for the dress I am measuring a 22, while in my waist I am measuring between a 12/14. Okay, I figured I would have some difference as I have always had a larger butt and wide hips. HOWEVER, I am terrified to order the dress and trust the sheath material at the top to be taken in 4-5 sizes... won’t that completely alter the look of the dress or ruin it completely?! It’s a Justin alexander and I included a picture for reference of the material at the top.

Has anyone else had to take their dress in that much when it finally came in? Wont the cups be really big? I am freaking out!! Dress sizing is 4 sizes off from waist to hip!!! 1Dress sizing is 4 sizes off from waist to hip!!! 2

LOVE the dress. It's so beautiful. I am the manager of a bridal shop and we do have this predicament all the time. It is good to know that after altering down more than 2 sizes it can be considered reconstructing the gown. Its not recommended but It can be done you just need to make sure you trust the person doing the alterations for you and beware it may not come out perfect.

With such a large waist-hip ratio, I believe you are going to have this problem with any dress you order. The good news is once the dress is correctly fitted to you it will look stunning!

I would possibly consult a seamstress about your measurements and the dress you wish to order before purchasing - if the bridal shop has an in-house seamstress you can ask them. Getting a dress to fit you correctly can definitely be done but it will be easier with some fabrics/designs compared to others, and in your shoes I'd feel a lot more comfortable relying on what sort of alterations the seamstress says are doable vs just a sales associate.

If you decide that this dress doesn't work for you, consider an a-line silhouette (it will be a little more accommodating of your small waist and larger hips) or a fit-and-flare/mermaid style in a stretch fabric, which may conform to your shape better without requiring as precise adjustments. Good luck!

    That's a gorgeous dress Chelsea!! 😍

It's way easier for seamstresses to take gowns in than it is to let them out, so I'd go with the size the store recommended you order! My hips pushed me a wedding dress size up and the store said they always order to your largest measurement.
