Dress size, alterations, & weight loss

Erica, on August 9, 2020 at 11:00 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 1 7
So I know this is a question to ask my bridal tailor, but while I’m waiting for my appointment.... opinions and experience welcome!

My wedding is next June (6.12.21). Because of restrictions I decided to online dress shop. Found the dress. Now contemplating the sizing.
I’m big into exercise. Before the gyms closed down I was there every day and will be once again as soon as I can. In the meantime home workouts have to do and it’s not as great. ie I gained a little weight and some waistbands got a biiiiittttt tight.
Right now I fit into a size 8 dress on my waist PERFECTLY. But the bust, hips, and length are all far too big.
Do I keep the 8 and have everything taken in and (hopefully) also have to deal with taking the waist in as well if I get back to my pre-pandemic weight/waist size?
I’m afraid of having so much taken in. I can’t imagine my waist would ever be smaller than the size 6. (And I’d also need to lose those 10 pounds I gained since March....) I think how huge the bust area is on me now is freaking me out more than it should.
So I need reassurance while I wait to go to the professional lol

I had a 5 size difference between my bust and my hips! Always get the size that fits the biggest part of your body and the rest can get taken in.

I would get the size that fits you now just in case. However I think you can manage to lose 10 lbs. I started a weight loss plan back when the pandemic started and have lost 15 of my 20 lb goal. My dress that I ordered is a little big in areas where I will have to have it taken in, but I’m ok with that.

I would do alterations but you do those usually 8 weeks before so if your weight is the same you are fine. I am still losing weight so I may need to get the dress taken in which is why I was told to wait 2 months prior to see.

I would get the dress that fits your current size, just in case. A dress that is too big can always be altered to be smaller, but you can't always make a smaller dress bigger.

I purchased my dress big, off the rack. My seamstress is a Godsend and has used her expertise to do alterations beautifully. I purchased my dress for $1200 and budgeted about the same just to make sure I had enough for all she was going to have to do. She brought it in, shortened it, added cups and fixed some holes. Do your research to find a good seamstress. I went to where the bridal store goes.

Keep the size you are now. 10 pounds is not that big a difference, and it’s easier to take a dress in than out. Also keep in mind that bridal runs small, so if you’re an 8 in a regular dress, you may actually be a 10 or 12 bridal. I’d get measured and see what size is recommended.

Yeah bridal sizes are really odd. I got a Jenny Yoo dress and I’m a street size 8 and I got an 8 and the waist fits and the rest is huge. Go figure lol meanwhile another company I tried a size 12 🤷🏻‍♀️
