Dress Shopping

Ashley, on July 30, 2019 at 11:14 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 14
Hi ladies. My wedding is 08-01-20. When is the best time to start dress shopping and then getting the actual dress?

10-12 months before the wedding is recommended.

I got my dress in April for our December wedding. I do plan on losing some weight, but not drastically enough to worry about alterations.

Like Caytlyn said. I would go with 12 months out, so right now basically. If you need to order a dress some designers can take up to 8 or 9 months for it come come in and then you need to factor in a month or two for alterations. Dont look unless you're serious on buying now. Your favorite style may not stick around this time of the year since they start discontinuing things around this time to prepare for all the new styles they bring out for bridal Christmas which is January to March. But this is also a good time to find things going on sale.

I started looking a little under 10 months out, and while that was totally fine, I could have waited. My dress came in in just under 2 months (I think they told me it could take up to 4), so it sat in my closet for another 4 months before my first fitting. It definitely depends what you want and how much you want to spend and save, but if you don't need a custom dress and you're more open to different dresses (i.e. you don't already have your heart set on a dress) you could probably get away with waiting until closer to the holidays to snag a sale. I know the boutique I got my dress from runs a "White Friday" sale on Black Friday where they have short appointment slots, but you can get really great deals on dresses, and for them, I think most dresses come in within a few months. Not sure if that'd make you extra anxious to wait until then, but it's at least something to consider!

Never hurts to start looking now! This way you can take your time and choose what you really love. I think a good time to buy would be 12 - 9 months before the wedding. Of course, keep in mind some designers might require you to buy earlier!

I went dress shopping, and ended up getting my dress that day, 11 months before my wedding. I was told that was fine, as some places you aren't able to take the dress home that day as it is made (mine took 5 months to come in), which still gave me time to get alterations performed.

Start nowish. I was always advised not to do dramatic body changes as dresses can take many months to come in and can only be tailored up or down 2ish sizes.

    That's my date too!

I am going on this Thursday to try on dresses to see what I like and what I don't like. Then in January or February at the latest is when I will be ordering my dress.

Most places recommend you have your dresses ordered at least 10 months before your wedding. Most dresses take several months to come in after being ordered. Then you have to leave yourself time for alterations. So I would start looking pretty soon, if I were you. I bought my dress at the end of January for my October wedding.

I got my dress 16 months out. I initially went shopping while I was back home and other out of state family were in town for a different family event. I just wanted the experience of dress shopping with my mom and favorite aunts! I ended up finding my dream dress. Oops! I’m glad I did though, the dress I chose takes 7 months to make before I even get it got the first time. Then however many months alterations takes. I say the earlier the better. I will admit that I see other dresses and wonder if I chose too soon but the dress chose me so I’m going with it!
