Dress shopping while losing weight

CaboBride2018, on September 29, 2017 at 5:59 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 8

My wedding is 7.5 months away and I've finally made some appointments to start trying on wedding dresses. I put it off for a long time because I was unhappy with my body, but I don't think I can wait much longer.

I joined Weight Watchers 3 months ago and have lost 25 pounds so far. I'm hoping to lose another 30-50 pounds before the wedding. I'm currently a street size 14 (down from 18) and I'd hopefully be street 6 by the wedding.

I know it's impossible to predict what dress size I'll be on my wedding day, but I'm also not trying to spend $$$ on alterations. I've also heard that dresses shouldn't be taken in more than 2 sizes.

Any advice on how to account for this while shopping for a dress? Would it be reasonable to ask a bridal shop to round down on my measurements when they'd usually round up? Could I pick out the dress and ask the salon for a latest possible order date (with rush fees) and get measured then? Are there certain styles or features I should avoid?

First off, congrats on your progress so far!!

Everybody and every BODY is different. My advice is buy in the size you are now, or just one size down. I had weight loss goals, and unfortunately I didn't hit them. I bought my dress in the size I was then, and it still fits like a glove.

You don't want to have to take it in multiple sizes, but you don't want to buy a size 8 and then if t doesn't fit, have to buy a whole new dress.

    All the best!!

If you do order a size down please remember that wedding dresses are generally small fitting. Generally you need a size bigger than your street size.

No advice, but that's amazing with your weight loss! Congrats on that!

Congrats! I think your idea about trying dresses now is great. When you find a dress (or dresses) you really like, ask about how long it will take to get the dress; then you can place the order at a time when you're within the delivery window and closer to your likely wedding weight. Also, it seems like many dresses from David's Bridal come in really fast, so depending on your preferences they it might be an option to consider that will give you a little more time. Good luck!

Thanks for the advice so far. To clarify, I'm not trying to order a dress that's way too small for me now. I know that's not a good idea

I'm in the same boat. Down 22lbs, with a goal of 15 more. I'm going to start trying on in late October.

I went ahead and ordered my dress. At first I was worried about the fit if I lost too much weight but I am in a category where my biggest concern is hiding my big arms and belly. I figured those will need to be a little looser even if I do go down more than 2 sizes.

I think your idea of talking with the shop about when to order is the best idea. You can still find your dress and have the style ready to go, keep hustling on the weight loss front (wtg btw!), and then get measured and order. But once you order, I would go into maintenance mode.
