Dress question(s)

Lynne, on August 31, 2022 at 8:23 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 6
I already have a dress, I went with what I always wanted (no tears). I did go with a size a lot smaller because I am having weight loss surgery next week.

When should I go looking again? I would like to find a dress that will help hide my extra skin and that I do love.
Ceremony and reception are at the same place. It was a bar YEARS ago but since has become a venue location. Wedding is June 2023.

Most boutiques will advise to purchase gowns at least 9-10 months ahead of the wedding due to the lead times (unless purchasing off the rack) meaning you'd need to pretty much start shopping now.

Generally as a rule of thumb dresses can be taken in or out 2 sizes before alterations would really change the dress so maybe start looking now and try get a gown that can easily be altered?

A lot of places sell off the rack. Maybe you could find a dress you love that's available to buy the same day? There's also the possibility of still wearing the dress you already have.

If you are planning to buy off the rack only (which would be only what stores have in your size) you only need to allow three months or so for alterations. Otherwise, you would need to also allow an additional 6-9 months for the dress to be ordered/ made in your size. Keep in mind that dresses can be altered down up to two sizes (depending on the style of the dress), so when you need to start the shopping process, it is ok if you lose more by the time the dress comes in. Your dress will fit better after alterations.

As long as the dress hides all of the extra skin. I really like my dress but there were no tears. I went with it largely because it is a style I have always liked and it is comfortable. I don't feel special or beautiful in it. If that makes sense.

When I was looking I went with what I looked like now in the dress not after surgery, didn't exactly keep the extra skin in mind. I don't feel beautiful or special in it

I completely understand what you are saying. I know that the timeline for ordering a dress basically means that you would need to start looking for your new dress now, and I know that doesn’t give you the time you need. I feel like there might be a few ways to make your current dress or a new dress feel more comfortable and special. Shape wear might help contain the extra skin, but I would definitely check with your doctor first. It might not be an option after surgery. Maybe you can add a jacket, have a sleeve kit made, or have a cape made for your dress to help give you coverage. It might be a good idea to talk to someone who does alterations about what you want and need in a dress first (before you go shopping again). They might be able to give you those things in your dress or even make a dress specifically for you. Good luck! You will be beautiful no matter what you wear!
