Dress price negotiable?

Lauren, on June 9, 2019 at 5:57 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 9
I'm shopping for wedding dresses and I'm wondering if anyone has negotiated a price on their wedding dress? Was it a private vendor or corporate (ie: David's Bridal). Is this not considered proper etiquette to try talking a dress vendor down in price? Thanks!

I wouldn't try to bargain with the shop, but there's nothing wrong with asking if there are any discounts that can be applied. The boutique where I bought my dress offered 10% off of your purchase if you ordered during your first visit.

Thanks. That's a good idea to ask about discounts!

If your looking for a secondhand dress, go for it!

If you're looking to buy new, I would suggest asking about any upcoming promotions (end of season sales, trunk shows, etc). This could be helpful if you're not on a tight deadline. Definitely do not go into a shop trying to haggle or negotiate the price. You wouldn't want to sour the relationship of the people that will be handling your dress.

I think it all depends on the situation and boutique. I went in telling my consultant that the top of my budget was $1500, but she put me in a $2000 dress. The entire boutique was on sale at least 20% already, but that was not enough to get my dress where it needed to be. She ended up talking tp the owner and gave me 25% off plus an additional $50 coupon.

I think places like David's Bridal would be a little more strict on their prices. They have sales often though, so try to schedule your appointment around one! I think asking for a discount can be kind of tacky, but you can word it in a better way.

Possibly off a sample or discontinued dress. Oftentimes, during a trunk show when a shop is showcasing new gowns from a particular designer you can get a discount if you order one of those dresses. (I wish I attended a trunk show! I thought that meant ONLY that designer’s dresses were avail to try on and the designer would be there pressuring you to buy! Nope. You can still try on other dresses, and if the designer is there he/she floats around the shop, maybe stopping to say hello or available if you’d like to ask questions). 😊

Thank you. I have plenty of time so I can keep an eye out for anticipated sales.

We didn't try, but I do know most designers have a set rate they charge for dresses so there probably isn't a ton of wiggle room.
