Dress Preservation.. Yay or Nay?

Alexandra, on March 8, 2019 at 2:40 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 7

Has anyone gotten their dress preserved, or is planning to?

I know I'll want to get it professionally cleaned right after the wedding to get any stains out, but I'm also considering getting it preserved. I'm kind of weirded out by the preservation companies which put it in a box that you aren't allowed to unseal, but I did find one company (Heritage Garment Preservation) which does "museum method" preservation. Basically this has it hanging in a garment bag that you can open as you please. It has really good reviews but it's pricey ($400).

To give more context, I can't imagine anyone else would ever wear it. If I'm lucky enough to have a daughter, I'd be surprised if my gown is still in style for her to want to wear. But I'd love it to be in excellent condition to show my future children/grandchildren, and I just love holding onto important keepsakes Smiley smile

Is getting your wedding dress (and veil) preserved worth it? Pros and cons?

My dress cleaning and preservation services are free with the dress shop I purchased my dress from. They told me this up front which is really nice. But let me just tell you, my mom has been BEGGING me to get my dress preserved when the wedding is over because she did not and she now regrets it so much. I tried to use a piece of fabric from her dress to incorporate it into my bouquet somehow and sadly we couldn't because the lace has yellowed. Luckily we ended up using the silk skirt under layer of her dress instead but the lace would have been so much nicer to use. I vote preserve your dress if you plan to have children or grand children and you are a sentimental person.

I got mine preserved and I can’t unseal it, but it’s in a really nice box with a “viewing window” so I can see the dress. I’m really glad I did it.

I've considered getting it preserved because I'm sentimental too. I doubt my potential daughter or granddaughter would want to wear it for the same reasons you listed, but I was able to cut part of my moms dress and use it, and I hope that my future kids would be able to do the same with mine. (I'm also keeping my moms now cut dress for this reason as well.)

I'm newly married and haven't looked much into it, but I've read a million terrible reviews about Davids Bridal preservation so I'm not sure where I will go.

I will actually be taking mine in to be preserved later this month. The salon where I got it from offers a discount to their brides. Whether or not I have a daughter and whether or not she would choose to wear it, I do have the desire to pass it on to SOMEONE. A niece, a friend's daughter, anyone who means a lot to me that would want to wear or repurpose the dress. So to me, it's absolutely worth it! I believe my salon offers it to "outsiders" for $295 including all cleaning and preservation, but give a 50% discount to those who bought their dress in their store.

The best preservation available is actually more expensive than $400 because it comes with free opening, inspection, pressing, refolding and repacking up-to once a year to prevent permanent creasing where the dress has been folded.

I bought the DB cleaning and preservation service for $99.
I have a big ole ballgown that I am taking to the beach so it’s worth it just for them to clean it.
