Dress is too big

Amber, on April 25, 2019 at 9:50 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 4
When I bought my dress the shop owner insisted I buy a size 18 for my measurements. I called the shop to discuss my concerns with the size and they said trust them as the experts. The dress comes in and it’s huge - falling off me big! I’m almost in tears and was dealing with it alone since I have no friends or family in my new town. Plus, I’m already on a tight turnaround (3 months from purchase). The alterations lady was visibly upset with the amount of work that was needed and it just made me feel worse (6 inches on the waist, fixing the cone boobs that my size D couldn’t fill, shortening the straps and the length). She ended up being very nice and turned the dress around quickly, however, I was done dealing with the owner of the store. I rushed to the shop without seeing the alterations lady again because they wanted me to wait a WEEK to try it on when it was done and waiting. I tried it on at the store with a sales lady and it fit just OK. It’s still large in the waist and chest and makes my waist look wider than it is. The straps pull on my shoulders because the top and waist have no support. I paid 2k for the dress and $350 for the alterations, and I’m not happy about it. I’m going to another place for a 2nd opinion with just 5 days out from the day I leave for my wedding. Talk about stressful. What are your thoughts, should I just be happy it’s not too tight?

I am so sorry you're having to deal with this mess so close to the date. The problem with sample dresses is that they often get stretched from all the tugging and pulling, trying to make them fit. I honestly think either these consultants forget or don't think about that. I had a similar issue at David's Bridal. They put me in a size 12 but it was falling off. I measured it (trusty cloth tape measure). It was well beyond the measurements their website gave. They wanted me to order a size 10. I insisted on a 12. If I had listened to them, the dress would have been too small and I would have been stuck with it since they rarely accept any returns.

Perhaps you can find your own seamstress. Sometimes an individual seamstress is better. All they have is their reputation unlike ones at dress stores.

I think you will end up regretting it if you don’t pursue additional alterations. I think it is strange that the shop owner did not recognize their fault and make more accommodations to have your dress fit more properly. I’m so sorry you’re going through this and hope it ends up fitting like a glove!

Hi Amber! I’m so sorry you are going through this with your dress. I agree with Sierra, if you are not happy with the way your dress fits you, you may regret not getting a second opinion. By finding a seamstress/tailor that works independently, you will be able to get an unbiased opinion and fully understand what can be done in your short timeframe. It may cost a little extra for just a quick turn around, but if you think you would feel happier and more confident on your wedding day, it may be a good option for you.

I bet it looks better to everyone else than you think it looks. (We are our own worst critics). BUT honestly, with so few days, you might have to leave it. Dresses usually can only be altered so much without completely ripping apart a dress and constructing essentially a new one. I had a friend who lost 15 lbs before her wedding, had her dress taken it but it still didn't fit her like a glove BUT she looked amazing. The dress was slightly loose but nobody noticed and she looked beautiful in pictures. In my case, my seamstress convinced me my dress needed to be taken out (big mistake on my part), she took it out WAY too much, I told her to take it back in, BUT it never fit exactly like I really wanted to it. Again, although I noticed, no one else did, everyone said I looked beautiful and it looks great it photos. With only 5 days, more alterations will likely cost hundreds of dollars (or at least they would where I live), so absolutely try, but it might be time to leave it as is.
