Dress is in the middle of alterations... postponing to 2021

Bird, on April 6, 2020 at 9:45 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 7
Hi everyone, my wedding dress is at my local seamstress. They are still open for business. She already started working on it and it is ready to try on. I’m not sure if it is completely finished but it’s at least ready for my second fitting.

My wedding is/was supposed to be June 27, 2020. We are 98% going to postpone to June 2021...
My dilemma is... what do I do with my wedding dress? Who knows what will happen in 14 months. Will I gain weight? Will it need to be altered agAin? Will I have to pay the flat fee again?
When should I pick up my dress and pay for it?
Do you think I should leave it “unfinished” at the tailors and resume alterations next year.
It is a flat fee of $550 and I was supposed to pay it once I picked up my dress.
This is one of the main stressors of postponing my wedding due to the novel coronavirus.

I would talk to your seamstress and share your concern and see what you can figure out with her. I’m sure she understands.

I agree, these times are unlike any other. Talk to your seamstress about the options. Could you leave it unfinished and then do a fitting next year and still be charged the same amount of money? Those are the types of questions to ask

I'm in the same situation. My wedding was planned for May 16 out of state and we're now looking at dates in May 2021. I had my first dress fitting in March with my 2nd and 3rd fittings scheduled on April 24 and May 5. Since my state issued a stay at home order to June 10 last week, my alterations shop is closed. I got emailed to reschedule my 2nd fitting to June 24. They can't keep my dress until next year so mine will be ready by the fall. I'm paying about 550 for my alterations too. Not gonna lie, I've been eating horribly since being on lockdown so I'm worried I won't fit into my dress by June lol but I'm using this as motivation to get into better shape and with our wedding postponed another year, I'm going to take advantage of the extra time to do what I wanted to do before my original wedding date. I'm no help I know but I'll be asking questions at my next fitting to see what can be done if my dress doesn't fit well by next May. I'm sure the shop will work with brides like us. These are not normal circumstances.

Thanks everyone. I will have To reach out to my seamstress and see what she has to say.

In the mean time, does anyone else have a similar conundrum? What are you doing with your dress if you won’t be using it for another year or plus?

    Update:

I just spoke to my seamstress...
We agreed over the phone that if I needed any minor adjustments she would charge me a minimal fee ... like if the waist needed to be let out... $45-$70...
If I got pregnant then that would be “a whole different story” and would probably get charged the $550 flat fee again. Basically as long as nothing major needed to be done, I would be in the clear.
So we rescheduled my second fitting to be in late September 2020. New wedding date: June 2021... 9 months out... and then if small changes needed to be made I could always get them done for a small fee.
I feel like I want to write this all out and have them sign....

Glad you got some clarity! And it's def a GREAT idea to get this in writing, I know personally I forget everything that isn't written down. Do you have an email address for her where you can send a "Just want to recap what we talked about to make sure we're both on the same page" email summarizing what you discussed?
