Dress is 2 sizes too small...

LauraM, on March 29, 2016 at 10:07 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 15

I planned on losing weight before my wedding day (which is in February btw). When I went to try on dresses, I fell in love with one that had been discontinued and couldn't be ordered. The problem? It was 2 sizes too small. At the time, I didn't care because I wanted to lose weight anyway! Now I'm worried that I made a huge mistake. What if I can't get down to that size by then? Has anyone else done this? Help!

Yikes, even if you do lose weight, there is no guarantee that you will lose 2 dress sizes. You could look smaller but still need the same size depending on how you carry your weight. No suggestions, hope it works out for you!

How much weight do you have to lose? Assuming that you actually have two dresses sizes to lose, I think it's definitely possible. Have you successfully lost weight in the past?

Healthy, realistic weight loss is 1-2 lbs a week. If you lose 1 lb a week for the next 8 months, that is 32 lbs. I would say that if you aren't down at least 15 lbs in 4 months, you might want to start looking at other dresses.

I would say I have about 30 lbs to lose. I have successfully lost weight in the past, but I need to be down to a size 10. I haven't been that small since high school though. A little nervous!

I did the buying two sizes too small part (also a discontinued style I loved), but haven't lost the weight or had the wedding, so I don't know yet if it will work out for me. But, it was a sample ordered online for not super expensive, so I won't be heartbroken if I can't lose the weight. I'm planning to re-evaluate in July or August and if I'm not even close, I'll go shopping again in my real size and try to sell this. Good luck!

I did the same thing. I only needed to lose about 4 inches from my chest/back area and had a good 6 months. I've lost weight in the past not problem. Well it completely backfired. I bought a knew dress 2 weeks before the wedding. I wish I hadn't spend the money and stressed so much about having to lose weight. My husband loves me the way I am. Why I felt I needed to squeeze in to a smaller dress is beyond me. I did not need that stress so close to the wedding.

Anyways, I hope it works out better for you!!

I think the weight loss is deff possible (if you have two pounds to lose.) If you got your dress for a good price, less than you had planned maybe you use the extra money to invest in a gym membership or diet plan.

I'll tell you, I've lost 10 lbs and my fiancé 14 in a month with the "The Fit Girls Guide." Check them out on Instagram and do a little search on them. It was very easy for us because the explain and do pretty much everything for you, except cook and eat. The recipes are yummy, and it only requires 30min exercises at home, no equipment needed. Best $25 investment I have ever made. Hope this helps!!!

ETA: if you will try the FGG then start with the 28 Day Jumpstart book.

Corseted back...have a seamstress take out the zipper and add a corset closure instead. I've known many brides to do this.

Everyone I've seen who has adopted this approach has failed at it. Wedding planning is a terrible time to try to lose weight to begin with, between stress eating and lack of time for exercise. And the pressure of having to lose weight to fit into a dress means that you tend to get depressed if the weight loss is not going as expected--and depression also tends to cause weight gain.

I would talk to a seamstress about whether the dress can be altered enough to fit you. Making a dress larger is typically harder than making it smaller. But depending on the seam allowances, it may be possible. And if the issue is mostly in your top half, a corset back may give you a bit more ability to get the dress to fit.

Looks like you have about a year. You have time to do this in a healthy way. Smiley smile

First see a nutritionist. They can help you set a healthy plan for your diet that is balanced and safe.

It REALLY helped to Cut alcohol completely!

I found a "work-out" I enjoyed going to multiple times a week. I love yoga sculpt & hot yoga. It's a mix of body weight movements plus Cardio. I found this most effective for the body I wanted.

I tried to eat out alittle less. Smaller portions. Skip soda/juice.

In a year I've lost about 20 lbs but more importantly I feel better & I love my new look. Size 6 to Size 2.

    You can do this!

Honestly I think you can do it. Last year I lost 30 lbs in about 2 months.. I wasn't starving myself either. I just made huge lifestyle changes (drastically cutting back on alcohol, eating clean, meal prepping, going to the gym during both cardio and weight lifting, counting calories to make sure I wasn't eating too little or too much). I think you can totally do it, I was around a size 12 when I started making changes and 2 months later I bought a dress to go to a friend's wedding and was able to buy a size 6. I've unfortunately put a lot back on due to stress and such, I actually purposely ordered my dress a size too small because I know I've lost the weight before and can do it again, i just have to want it bad enough.. what I paid for the dress alone makes me want it bad enough lol

Take your dress to a seamstress and get a professional estimate of how much they can let it out. The salon rep told my DD her dress could be let out a size or two so she bought the size 10. Well, it had a zipper all the way up the side so any material that would have been used on that side was gone. She ended up with about 1/2 size up and she worked out like a crazy fiend for about 3 months. She wasn't overweight at all, but she had to firm up to make the dress look right. Talk to a seamstress - corset back may be your saving grace here.

I've dropped a couple sizes in the past few months alone. Are you saying you need to drop two sizes in 12 months? Cut out alcohol, make a plan to workout 3 times per week, and start meal prepping (protein, veggie, complex carb). You should be able to make it work.

Honestly - I hear a lot about the stress eating, or how stressful wedding planning can be. Just channel that stress into something better. My gym time is ME time. Block everything out, put on some good music and focus.
