Dress Hunt Woes- Advice Needed!

Elise, on May 11, 2020 at 11:12 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 1 12

Hey everyone!

I’ve finally gone dress shopping and I fell in love with a dress. When I walked in I told them my budget was 2.3k max. After trying 5-6 dresses, I was ready to leave when they showed me a gorgeous gown. Unfortunately it was 1.2k over budget (I hate when they do that 😭) and was sleeveless.

Anywho I’ve been contacting a few online shops to create the dress of my dreams inspired by the one that broke my heart. I’m in love with illusion neckline long sleeve dresses. Of all the dresses I was able to try on in store they did not have one like this in store, but I did try on a dress with a bit of lace. I personally do not like the ashy, kind of gray look that lace has on dark skin. I have seen a few black brides get it right where the lace does look amazing on them. I spoke to a designer who suggested using colored tulle as he only has ‘ivory” lace. I have never heard of this and he’s not local for me to try it against my skin. Anyone have any advice? Photos for reference

I do not like the line of demarcation at the neckline and I think the lace does not blend well.

This is a great example of that ‘ashy’ lace I want to avoid

Number 5 is my favorite. How does the bottom part looks like?

Try Stella York. (6843). There is different colored tulle (for the shear part). You don’t want white or even nude unless it’s truly shear. The ashy one is someone’s idea of “nude” similar to one size fits all- not so much.

Have you looked on Cocomelody? You can customize your gown without it costing an arm and leg.

I'm a fashion designer and here is my advice: Do NOT buy an illusion dress you haven't tried on, 95% chance is it will not match your skin tone. Do NOT trust anyone who says you should use a colored tulle, tulle breaks with as little as a nail scraping it. Good quality mesh is available in different skin tones, but you have to try them against your skin to be sure it matches. Find someone who can show you samples! Either way, to avoid the ashy look, stay away from ivory, white, or "nude" mesh.

    Ps. These gowns are gorgeous!

I was going to say about half of this really putting inference on "Do not buy illusion unless you've tried it on" and stay away from tulle on your skin, it is ITCHY!

I personally like 4 the best, but if you have the name number and maker of your dream dress there might be someone selling it on wedding dress resale website making it within your buget.

Is there anything that can be done after production or is it not worth it?

It depends on the amount of details, but it can get quite expensive if the alterations include removing appliques, beads, remaking new sleeves or a full top which then has to be reensembled. If you find a dress on sale and alterations keep you within your budget then go for it, but if not it may be better to either have it made or keep trying gowns on until you find the right one.
