Dress Help Or Advice?

Corie, on January 22, 2020 at 11:14 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 16
It took about 30ish dresses but I think I’ve finally my dress! It is at David’s Bridal but over my budget. I found the same dress *brand new* on stillwhite exactly the amount I was willing to spend. She has not worn it before or had any alterations, she wore a different dress. It is a size 6 and I am a 4 so it would need some work.

How long should it take for alterations like this? Is it worth buying a dress a size bigger? I found a couple of the same one in my actual size but they were used & priced higher than this one.

I would say maybe find a trusted seamstress and show her the dress and ask her if the alterations won't alter the way the dress looks and how much it would be. Alterations for wedding gowns can be pricey Smiley smile

I used the DB alterations department. My first appointment for alterations was early December and my second and hopefully last one will be tomorrow. A little over 30 days left until the big day!

Just had my first appointment with DB, but my dress basically fit me lol. I think the lady and I were both shocked. She ended up hemming the top but that did still take some work. I'd allow a few months for alterations. Also, the actual dress may be tighter than the sample, so you might not need as much work as you think.

Are you a street size 4 or a bridal 4. Cause a bridal gown that’s a size 6 will really be like a street 2-4, depending on the brand. Look up the size chart on David’s website to compare the measurements to yours. It might not be such a bad thing to buy a size 6 in a wedding dress for you. Good luck!

Ps - let’s see the dress!!

This can be done, but it depends on the style of the dress. My sister bought her bridesmaids dress in two sizes bigger in order to fit her hips because she is very hippy. The dress was way too large everywhere else. The seamstress who is an amazing seamstress worked hours upon hours on it to try to make the dress fit properly, but it just didn't fit right because of the style of the dress. A week before the wedding I had to purchase a new dress for my sister for my wedding.

I believe I am bridal 4...I remember that the dress I tried on at the store was a 4 and it fit great! I usually wear a 6 in jeans. I needed the straps a little shorter, the chest area was a bit bigger than I need lol. 😊

Have you tried it on? Wedding gowns run super small. I wouldn't be too concerned with the dresses being used. It's not like they've been worn 100 times. If you can find a cheaper used on in the correct size, I'd buy that one. If they aren't cheaper, I'm sure a size bigger will be completely fine.

Yep, I tried it on in a 4 and fit great. I was planing to go back to DB and see what a 6 feels like too. True, I just wasn't sure if it was better to go not worn/used direction or not. There was one in size 4 that had been used and not dry-cleaned. Not sure if it has been altered either, I messaged her too. Smiley smile

It’s so pretty!! Funny how the smaller size fits you, usually bridal is opposite in sizes. Maybe the 6 would work, but then you’ll have to pay more for alterations which can then break your budget...can you go back to try it in a six? Before you buy the still white dress?? Good luck whatever you decide.

I found the dress on Poshmark in size 4 for $800. She says only worn for photos and unaltered. Would that work for you?

Gorgeous dress! I just wanted to say it's important to realize that sample gowns in bridal salons may be significantly stretched so they fit differently than a brand new dress the same size. I know that sounds weird, but think about all the times a bride who was a size 8-10 wanted to try that size 4 sample on. The consultants will have tugged and clipped that dress so the bride can get an idea of how it looks on them. Daughter tried her dress on (not at DB) in a size 8 and the consultant had to clip a good 4" at the waist -- it seemed HUGE on her. However, when they took her measurements, she was a perfect match to the manufacturer's size 8.... I was skeptical, but the consultant assured us we should go by the size chart, and we did. Daughter's dress came in, and it fit her PERFECTLY. Be sure to order by the manufacturer's size chart -- NOT based on sample size fit. (At one salon they full-on zipped daughter into a size 4 dress -- there is NO way she would actually wear a size 4, the dress was just that stretched.) Good luck! Smiley heart

What MOB said. I tried on my actual dress yesterday, and I was shocked by the fit. The sample I tried on was a size smaller and fit about the same as my actual dress, and I haven't gained weight. But that sample had been very stretched out and fit closer to the bigger size. So really, I wouldn't worry about going up a size. It may actually fit you better.

Good! Insist that they measure you and then show you the size chart. (Have your mom or someone else right over the consultant's shoulder.) It's going to be the store's benefit to measure you and just suggest a size (they don't really want you to go buy the dress from the website or elsewhere) -- they work on commission. You can also use the size chart and measurement info on the DB website to verify the right size choice.
