Dress Fitting - who should come!?

Chelsea, on December 7, 2017 at 3:55 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 19

Hi all! My wedding dress just arrived, way sooner that I originally thought! I brought my bridesmaids, MOH, grandmother, aunt, future MIL, and my mom dress shopping (I went twice, different people with me each time). My fiance has a sister and a sister in law that are older than me and aren't in the wedding party, so I didn't ask them to come. Should I ask them to come to my initial try on? No alterations will be made, it's just me trying on the dress ensuring that there are no initial issues with it. I have to go within 30 days to try it on, pay for it and make sure that everything is good to go before alterations start months down the road. What are your thoughts? Thanks!

I wouldn't, why would they want to? I'd ask one person you trust for a second opinion, but I don't think this is an event.

I would personally just take my mom to the fitting and maybe my sister (who is my MOH since she would have to learn the bustle.) Fittings aren't as big of a deal in comparison to actually picking the dress, IMO. I'd take as little people as possible.

A fitting isn't really "exciting" like it is when you're picking a dress and coming out in different styles. It's more trying your dress on, you like the look, you schedule an alterations appointment and thats it. My first fitting when my dress came in took all of 15 minutes.

    ETA: clarity

Yeah, picking out the dress is kind of an event, but that's it. I have a two friends who couldn't go with me to pick it out and are actually upset they missed it (don't ask me why). So they specifically asked if they could go with me to a fitting. But that's the only reason I'm bringing anybody.

Just take two or three people who will be honest with you. Like sometimes, brutally honest. It doesn't matter if it's your mom, sister, best friend, MOH, etc. Title means nothing.

You don't need to go to a fitting with an entourage. One extra pair of eyes is fine, two at the most, IMO. Only my mom came to fittings with me, and it was my mom and sister when I picked out my dress.

I did the fittings by myself. Nobody needs to see that.

I just had my mom and FMIL come with after my dress first came in. And only because they both specifically asked to come with.

Just did mine, it lasted 5 minutes and my friend came with me to take pictures. Otherwise, no one really needs to go. It's the shortest appointment ever lol

I went alone for that and have also gone alone to all my alterations appointments so far. It's not really an event anyone wants to attend but you.

I honestly think the only time you need someone would be your final alterations fitting when you pick it up, so the seamstress can show your mom or MOH how to properly zip/lace up/ bustle your dress.

I might pick it up by myself, and after that my mom and sister will probably come to one fitting, mostly so my sister can learn how to do the bustle. My mom really wants to come with me to pick it up (she hasn't seen it) but I feel weird having people see it before it fits.

I went for all alternations and everything alone. I'm going to have a final dress reveal alone to my mom at my house with Champagne so she can see the final product.

I brought my mom, but that's it. I really only brought her because she was with me when I bought it and she would be helpful in ensuring everything was correct. It was literally a 10min appointment where I put it on and we both went "Yup! Its the right dress and size! Still love it!" then we left. I feel like inviting them for the try on would be kind of pointless unless your only goal is for them to see the dress. For me at least, it was so quick. But do what you feel is best!

Edit: That's for the initial try on when it arrived. For my fittings, my mom and my sister are coming. Sister is my MOH and will be bustling it. Rest of my crew doesn't need to be a part of that.

I'm taking my Grandma because it will make her day, and my mom wants to go as well.

2 of my girls asked if they could go with me since they weren't there when I picked it so I'm letting them come with me. Other than that I'll probably go by myself until the final fitting.

I would go alone. Even when I went for alterations, I went to the first appointment by myself, then my mom and MOH went w me to pick it up just to make sure at least one of then would know how to bustle my dress.

To pick up my dress, only my mom and grandmother went with me--it was also my grandmother's birthday and she wanted to see the dress. She actually picked out my veil that day too. For alterations, it will more than likely only be my mom and/or MOH.
