Dress Fitting Issue- can't be taken in at the bust?!?!

short-not-sweet, on August 4, 2017 at 9:28 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 19

I bought my dress in a size 8, and it fit nicely everywhere except the bust. My bust measured as a 4, so it's significantly too large there. Today I had my first fitting appointment with the seamstress, who told me she couldn't take the top in because of the boning, and that I should just stuff my bra. I'm really upset with this result, and am hoping for help from other women or vendors? I'm in the Poughkeepsie NY area, with only two months left before my wedding. Thank you!

Well you can always see if she can remove the boning, or buy some cheap inserts.

My seamstress said she wouldn't remove the boning, it didn't seem like she was comfortable doing that and I don't want to convince her to do something beyond her comfort zone. Has anyone else removed the boning in order to take the bustline in, and had a good result?

I would go to a new seamstress. Yours sounds inexperienced. Mine told me they could remove/move/add boning to my comfort and for alteration purposes. I would do some research on local seamstresses and get a second opinion. It's definitely doable.

The boning is the foundation of your bodice. Take it out and you will immediately lose the wonderful shape that it has. Because of the placement of the boning and the illusion lace overlay it would be incredibly difficult to take it in, or dart the bodice, and have it look good let alone resemble the original. They would have to remake the bodice in a smaller size for you and attach the size 8 skirt.

No wonder she was nervous. I really wish they had told you before you bought the dress.

Removing some boning is pretty standard stuff with wedding dress alterations, I had some removed around the bust for the same reason. "Stuff your bra" should never be a solution from a professional. Something can always be done. Find someone else.

Find another seamstress who is an expert in bridal dresses and at least get a second opinion

Time for a new seamstress. It doesn't look bad in the photo though.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I'm going to try to find a new seamstress/tailor. If anyone has recommendations for the Poughkeepsie, NY area, I'd be very grateful!

I also think its worth getting a second opinion.

Also, you could have cups sewn in.

Update: I called a few other seamstresses I found on Yelp (my area seems to have so few!) and one said she'd be happy to look at it and that she does this type of alteration all the time. I have an appointment set up with her in a month, since I still have to get the dress back from the first seamstress (for the other alterations she's doing) Thanks for the encouragement everyone!

Hi I was wondering how everything turned out for you. I am now 2 months out from my wedding with my first appointment today at the tailor and thought “oh this fits me great I only need my boobs fixed!” And ran into the exact same problem. Please advise! Today was a rough day.

Have her tack some inserts into the cup area and see if that looks and feels ok to you.
