Dress Dilemma

Kathryn, on December 12, 2019 at 11:52 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 18
So some context, I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in July after a lot of bouts of intense anxiety and surges of feeling just awful in general. Immediately after, I dropped sodas and started a strict low carb diet, and I was finally able to feel more like myself and a lot more controlled. The other benefit of that diet of course is that the pounds have started to melt off of me.

So we got engaged in August, and I picked my dress mid-September. It's a gorgeous drop waist ballgown that I still love. At the time, the size 24 sample was way loose, and I agreed with ordering a 22 with some small anxiety about it being too small. When it came in in early October, I picked it up, tried it on, and it was perfect. Fit me snugly and hugged my curves.
Well, my dreams of simple alterations have been shattered. I kept up my strict diet because keeping my anxiety in check and keeping my diabetes under control was important to me...but you can see where this is going. I've dropped about fifteen pounds since I picked my dress up. Definitely had to go down a clothing size because everything was loose.
My sister was in town with me, and we decided to try on my dress. Well, back to the same problem I had with the size 24! It's a sleeveless ballgown, so it hangs around me and droops low. Which is great, but now I'm in a dress Dilemma.

I will probably keep losing weight. I should probably trade out my ballgown for a size down because right now it is not the right size, and alterations will probably cost me an arm and a leg. But would it make more sense to get a different dress instead of trying to alter a ballgown and hoping things will fit well enough on the day? I'm doing really well physically, but now it's all up in the air about my dress.

I don't want to do a million alterations, though my sis and I debated a corset back. Adding straps is also possible and might be necessary at this point. But it also feels like I would save more money exchanging my dress for one that will work with me more.
Thoughts? Has anyone dealt with this and David's Bridal? I'm probably going to talk with the alterations lady and listen to her groan about my oversized dress before I decide....but I've been eyeing some dresses on the site that have sleeves that would work better. What a dilemma.

Congrats on the weight loss. I would say it is all how you feel because it sounds like you may want an entirely new dress. Ball gown can look great on anyone. I ordered a size smaller than suggested because I knew I planned to lose weight and did not want to deal with any alterations if possible. I would say order a size down but if you are having some dress regret then look at other dresses too. Call DB to be sure of what your options are.

I LOVE my ballgown...but I'm acutely aware of how much my weight is still going down. So I would have to add a corset back and straps and who knows what hemming to get to wear it. My problem is I didn't want a million alterations lol - we're paying for things ourselves. I'm also aware that I need to tone parts of my arms that are now just kind of flabby, so the sleeves are tempting so I feel comfortable.

I know that even though my dress was a final sale I could exchange it for the same price or higher but could not return. I would reach out to them to see if they can exchange it. I would get a smaller size to avoid alterations and ask them the best size. How many months are you out?

3 and a half ish. We're getting married April 4th, which is about when people have suggested alterations. I think I can take some time over the Christmas break, ask their advice, then hopefully order another dress because I don't plan to put the weight back on lol. That'll hopefully give me about two months for alterations on the new dress, whichever I pick. No matter i will probably exchange the dress i have now because it's way too big lol.

Girl YOU GET YOURSELF A TIGHT SEXY DRESS! Listen I love my dress but if were shopping for a new one even due to weight loss I would probably get something else. Go for it and if they will exchange or take refunds you should get what you want.

My only fear/hesitation is my mom can't be with me, but I am DROOLING over mermaids lol. I think i need to just go with something nice and snug because I do want to celebrate how I'm feeling now! And maybe some nice sleeves to cover my arms. My dress was perfect for me....twenty pounds ago. Now I feel like I need to celebrate my curves.

Can you video message your mom or send her pics of the dresses? She does not need to be there but I would have at least a good friend there for opinions too. My dress fitting my aunt was too sick to go but I would message her pics and ask her opinions. I would celebrate the part of the body you want. Show off your curves. Smiley smile

Before you decide to trade your dress in for a new one, make sure you really review their return/exchange policy if they have one - I know if many places have to order a dress for you, once you pick it up, it's yours for keeps!

If you're still as in love with your dress as you where when you first bought it, then let the alterations team groan about it a little before they get to work making it fit like a glove. Talk to them about a realistic timeline of how long alterations will take, and try and put it closer to your wedding date so the fit remains perfect Smiley smile

If you're not so sure how the style fits on your body post-weight loss, then definitely try on other dresses and find one that makes you feel truly you!!

Go exchange the dress! I just went to my first alterations this week and they're taking in an inch from both sides cause I got a size too big cause that's what DB had. I could've ordered one online at my size but it wouldn't get here in time for my alterations.

Also, roughly how much weight are you losing per month. Do you see yourself needing an even smaller one in a few months after you exchange it? I would assume you'll keep getting smaller with your new diet, so you might want to chat with DB to see what they recommend.

    Congratulations by the way!

Thanks!!! I thought I had more or less petered out in October, which is why I felt comfortable with taking the dress I have now, but my body is burning off about five pounds a month - it would probably be more if I exercised, but I want to give myself some breathing room first. And i didn't want to shed weight like crazy or stress myself out over the holidays! It's why I'm considering a dress with straps/sleeves, so I don't have to worry about holding it up if I lose more weight and have time to get it fitted to me. I'll see what DB says - I also don't want to get a size down with the expectation of losing weight and then not lose it, so the straps are again tempting. Plus I can get something fitted and sexy.

Why would you not do alterations? Then the dress would fit perfectly?

It's at least a size too big, so it's probably going to be a large alterations bill. Plus I picked this dress when I was heavier and wanted to hide my curves.

My wedding dress is from David's Bridal and I lost roughly 30 lbs from when I ordered it and when I had my first fitting. They gave me the option to size down the dress if I wanted instead of paying for massive alterations. The only thing is if you plan to do this you need to allow enough time for the new dress to arrive and be altered prior to your wedding. I was roughly 2 months out from my wedding when I did my first fitting.

That's what I was wondering! Thank you. I think I need to go soon to give the dress time to get here.

When I ordered my dress from DB, I was told that I would be able to exchange my dress to save on alterations. Do you still have the tags in place and original receipt? If so, go exchange it before it's time for alterations. I called them 2 weeks ago about alterations and was booked for January 7th for my February 29th wedding. I would have to pay for alterations at the end of my first appointment and the other two appointments would be scheduled as well. I was also told that I could continue exercising but to stop and maintain once I have my third and final fitting which would be 1 to 2 weeks before the wedding. I hope that this information does not change once I start alterations because I plan to continue losing weight!

Yes, everything is in place! We were super careful when trying it on. That's also super helpful because blood sugar is kind of a daily regiment and I can't let it go bad during an already stressful time lol. It's also why I'm debating a dress that will already have sleeves or straps to help with alterations.

I feel like our bodies work in such weird ways.

Straps would be perfect! I wonder if you get super fitted sleeves and lose more it might be very loose on you. Someone above mentioned getting a corset so you can always tighten it if you lose weight which sounds like a good idea!

If this helps at all, this is what I got charged for my alterations. Like I said, if I got the right size for my waist I wouldn't have to take in the seams or side seams (multiple layers). That would have saved me easily over $100! Oh well...

I’m 5’4” wearing 4” heels. The dress has 3 layers (2 which are tulle).
I got a size 4, but the lady said I should have gotten a size 2. Unfortunately, that would have taken months to receive so getting size 4 was my safest option.
    Taking in neckline $45

Taking up shoulders (cause I’m still short!) $35

    Take in seams $65

Reshape arm hole (cause taking up shoulders) $20

    Hem $150

    Take in side seams $60

    Bustle $50

    Add cups $20

Congratulations on the weight loss and working hard to keep your health in check, that should always be top priority. I exchanged my dress with David’s Bridal and they made it so easy, but I know not everyone has that same experience with them. Your original dress was absolutely beautiful, and it’s be a shame to see it go, but if it’s not working, it’s not working. It doesn’t hurt to go and try on dresses at David’s again and see if you can find something else.
