Dress delay - how much time is enough for alterations?

Ashley, on November 8, 2022 at 11:37 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 11
Hey everyone, I am starting to majorly freak out because my wedding dress should have been in my possession by now - but it’s not. It’s over 3 weeks late due to those damn “supply chain” issues. My wedding is January 21st and I am absolutely freaking out over getting alterations done in time if I don’t get my dress until December. Ive just heard so many times you need about 3 months and that is not possible now. I guess I’m just looking for any positive stories. I know alterations timelines depend on so many factors but I am so so nervous. My dress is a ball gown and I’m hoping due to my shoes and a hoop skirt that no length changes will be needed, but at the least I know the bust has to be taken in and I just don’t know if I will have enough time with all of the holidays approaching. Any positivity would be appreciated. I love my dress and I have no idea what a plan B would even be at this point.

I got all my alterations (zipper to corset, hemmed, and cups added) done in the 6 weeks before my wedding! I think you'll be fine if it comes in soon!

You can absolutely find someone who will do it for you within a month if you need to, especially if you're not doing anything major like adding straps. You will be fine. :-)

I worked in bridal for several years. Three months is way too early. We would usually recommend six weeks out, closer to four weeks if any kind of weight change is anticipated. I've seen alterations happen in under two weeks. I don't think you should be worried at this point

Ok yes it all depends on how much work needs to be done most dry cleaners. Do alterations for a lesser price I just didn't bother because my shoes were high heels and I had a petite coat under my dress as well. I hope that everything works out and your dress is here on time. And Congratulations to you both

You should be fine! I had a dress made FROM SCRATCH in 4 weeks. I would suggest calling around to find a seamstress now though, to lock in someone that is able to work with your turnaround time.

You absolutely don’t need 3 months, but there is a chance you’ll run into a fee for rush alterations…I had this…BUT, I had my alterations done in a single week!

My seamstress told me that she could easily do a whole dress in a week. You may run into rush fees, but it's definitely not an impossible task!
