Dress Confusion 🤪

Alycia, on June 20, 2019 at 5:11 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 7
I've looked at dresses for the past year or so. I'm starting to get cross-eyed. There is one Morilee dress that I always seem to go back to, so I'm going to try it on for the first time next month. I'm afraid I'll hate it once I have it on. Even if it's awesome, I'm afraid to pull the trigger. I keep looking online to make sure there is nothing I'm missing before I make the decision. I started a list of things I know I want and don't want so I can make searching easier.

~I love a V neckline

~I really want a showstopper train.

~No A line silhouettes.

~No extreme mermaids (super tight, then bursting to a poofy skirt at the knee. )

~I like a drop waist to a flowing full skirt at or just below the hip.

~I love beading and sparkle but it needs to be classy, not gaudy

~I love a low back

I feel like I'm missing something.

What are your absolute "must have's" and absolute "no's" when looking for your dress?

Hi. So it kinda sounds like you haven't tried on anything yet. If that's the case, I HIGHLY suggest trying on basically every shape (even the ones you think you hate), because a ton of people go with a shape they didn't think they'd like. For example, I thought I wanted a line or sheath, but I ended up going with trumpet. My must haves were not white white, straps, and at least some lace. I got ivory, mostly lace, and strapless lol. My must have changed slightly with the no straps, so another reason, I think its important to try on all kinds of stuff, at least at first.

I agree with PP just try on diff things because you may not know what works on you or what you may end up actually liking.
But for me I knew I didn't want a giant ball gown or strapless. I thought I wanted mermaid but after trying it on I didn't like it on myself

What you’re “missing” is the most important: it’s how you FEEL once you’re IN a dress. Stop browsing online, it’s only going to confuse you into thinking you know what you want. Get it in dresses. More than one. Don’t feel the need to pull the trigger after the first try! And don’t focus on checking boxes.

Honestly the dress I ended up with DID have everything i thought I wanted . I did try on a bunch of silhouettes just to be sure (was a bit surprised by a few that I loved that I never would’ve picked on the hangar or from a picture) but ultimately my preferred style won out. The thing is, with a list of say 10 features that I loved, there were TONS of dresses that checked every box. But all created differently. All lovely, but some....just not for my body. Which seems crazy as they were all the same silhouette and shape! By my LAST appointment (basically 3rd proper appointment, with a consultant at a large store , but I did browse a couple second hand/sample shops as well), I knew “exactly” what I wanted, and listed the features to my consultant (haha she knew I was serious and ready to commit!)— I had a lot of very precise things and she brought back a rack of like 10 dresses and said “see anything you like?” And I was like YES YES EVERY SINGLE ONE! Nailed it!! But every one was SO different on. Even though they all had fundamentally the same features, I had strong opinions on each. First was beautiful and flattering but a hard no, comfort wise. The second was honestly atrocious on me. The THIRD I fell head over heels in love with. So, she brought me back to the rack and asked, basically “do any of these compete ?” A couple it was like “no way, the one I’m in is much better” and there was ONE that I thought “maybe, let’s see, just give it a try to be sure” — well, turns out THAT one was my dress!

I should also mention that at my very FIRST appointment I tried on 3 that more or less fit the same description, and I’d seen them all online on this store’s website. One felt like “this is on the right track, but it doesn’t work for me” ; one was AWFUL on my hips; and the third, I loved. It was wonderful, but my reaction was also a strong maybe. It was like “I love this dress. IF I can’t find anything better, it would absolutely work” ....but, if that’s how you feel in the dress, it’s probably NOT the one. My ultimate dress WAY outshined that one and was really perfect for ME.

I know this wasn't your question, but if you haven't tried on any dresses yet, then i highly agree with Brae. The only thing I knew I didn't want, which remained true through my search, was no ball gowns and no long sleeved. I thought i wanted a sheath dress but ended up with a mermaid. My other must was it needed some sparkle.
Plus, keep in mind that dresses can look drastically different on the models than they do on you.

For instance, I didn't like my dress on the model at all. I went to the boutique and they had me pick 6 dresses I wanted to try on. I just browsed and picked pretty dresses on the hanger.

As soon as I put my dress on I KNEW it was the one. I didn't recognize it from all the browsing of Maggie Sotteros Id been looking at for the past 2 months, so I was really shocked when I googled my gown and realized it was 1 of only a handful of Sottero dresses that I DIDN'T like when looking online. Crazy I don't like it on the figure perfect model but I lovvvve it on me lol!

I hope the dress is everything you love when you try on... But if it isnt, just remember an opened mind will help a lot!
