Dress code

Jessie, on September 23, 2019 at 2:00 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 14
What is a cute way to let guests know on our wedding website that we encourage them to dress in either Boho or Western style clothes? Our ceremony and reception will be outdoors at the end of March in Arizona. Our wedding style we're going for is laidback, Southwestern, Boho.

Really unless you expect your guests to dress more formally the venue and time of day should dictate the dress code. I don't know that asking guests to dress in a certain style is really appropriate. They are there to celebrate with you, not act as props or scenery. The only exception I have seen is for couples in costuming groups, or Halloween themes to let guests know they are welcome to wear garb, costumes, or masks.

I guess you could put it as your dress code on the wedding website, but I would be prepared for a good amount of guests not to participate. Some might not know what you mean by that style or will assume it doesn't apply to them since normally the dress code isn't that specific for guests (usually casual, semi-formal, black tie etc.).

I've seen people use something like "halloween costumes encouraged" on wedding websites so you could add a note that says "Boho or Western attire encouraged" .

You're welcome! I like that it helps guide the guests but not demanding a certain look!

Yeah, I’m assuming there’s going to be some guest who won’t take part or even look at the website, we’re okay with that haha. Just wanted a cute way to let everyone know they can join in if they’d like.

We’re not going to be sticklers about attire but if guests would like to dress in fun clothing they normally don’t wear, we want to let them know it’s cool with us. Laidback rather than black tie kinda wedding. Just looking for a cute way to word it on our website, not enforcing or expecting them to be props.

I see. Then stating that such attire is encouraged or welcomed might help. Only you know your guests and know if this is something they may participate in.

Our website said "Attire: Semi-Formal (cowboy boots encouraged!)". I think the tone of your save the dates, invites, venue & website let people know too. You could always mention it on a details card.

I like stating it as “encouraged” but you might want to also add some type of description. I wouldn’t know what to wear if someone just said “boho” and is “western” jeans and cowboy boots? You might want to be more specific or you’re going to get a number of phone calls asking what you’re looking for. No one wants to feel uncomfortable in what they’re wearing,
so I think people will definitely be calling to confirm that they know what you want.

I put my info on a details card. I would've never thought of it but when I went to order my invitations, it came with it. So the lady who I ordered from, put "semi formal-no jeans please" on the detail card, along with where we're registered
