Dress bust too big but seamstress won't take it in

Adelyn, on June 6, 2018 at 9:56 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 10
So my dress fits me great everywhere except the bust. I have pretty small breasts and the dress just doesn't "hug" them the way I'd like. In fact, if I lean forward at all it gapes in front quite a lot! I asked my seamstress to take the dress in at the sides but she says, because the dress has a low back, it will not fix the problem. Instead she suggested shortening the straps. Has anyone else heard this about low back dresses?

Hi Adelyn! I believe low back dresses do require different alteration methods due to the structuring and fit, but you could also try getting a second opinion with another seamstress for further input! I also know shortening the straps definitely help with providing a more snug fit, so I would try that! I hope you're able to get everything tailored to your desires! Good luck!

I have tiny boobs as well so my seamstress sewed in two push up cups on each side. Could you try that? It’s like a built in backless bra

She actually did that already and it's still very loose in front.

Trust your seamstress that shortening the straps will fix the problem. If you don't have confidence in your seamstress take your dress to someone else

Yes I had my dresses back cut into a v and when it was finished the front gapped real bad. Hoping cutlets will help

I am also a seamstress and I would agree with your seamstress that taking in the side seems won't do much if you have a low/open back. Shortening up the straps, however, can improve the fit, as that will limit how far the front can fall away from your torso. Once the straps have been altered, you can also use fashion tape to help secure the cups in place.

To update, I ended up taking my dress to a much more experienced seamstress who was able to take it in at the sides. It was only about an inch in total but it helped SOOO much. If you are not happy with your dress fit after alterations I highly recommend getting a second opinion. I am so glad I did!

This is exactly what my first seamstress did. While shortening the straps helped a little bit, the dress still didn't fit me correctly. I had a different seamstress take in the sides which made it fit perfectly.
