Dress beading discoloration!!

Kristen, on August 23, 2018 at 10:18 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 5

Hi,

So my wedding is in the end of September. I had a seamstress update the dress that my mother and grandmother both wore for their weddings (and my great grandmother actually originally made). The dress came out beautiful and I took it home at the beginning of August. I went to try it on yesterday and all of the beading in the front has turned brown and appears to be starting to bleed into the front of the dress. We're thinking maybe humidity has caused this (as it was stored in AC while the seamstress had it...) but we're not sure. Has anyone heard of a similar thing happening or have any ideas? Smiley sad

Old beads have metal in them and over time that rusts, probably the cause. Did it get steamed? Maybe that is the cause. Posts pictures! Love a good vintage dress. I wore my grandmas that has been worn 6 times in our family.

Thank you so much for your response! I will definitely post pictures when I have a chance. It was not steamed yet, but was hung at my parents' house which is across the street from the ocean and very humid...so that would make sense. :-/ Do you have a suggestion for cleaning it, and/or covering the beads to hide the color change and prevent them from rusting more? I really want to be able to wear it with the original beading for the wedding....

I have no idea. I'm sure if you google something will turn up. You may also consider contacting vintage clothing store as I'm sure they deal with it all the time.
