Dress bags? Blankets?? Is there something else i should be storing my dress in??

Katherine, on September 23, 2019 at 6:41 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 1 16

Hey all! So, during this whole process of looking for a dress and then actually FINDING one, it kind of slipped my mind that I’d actually maybe need to protect this thing! I didn’t want to spend whatever exorbitant fee DB was gunna throw at me on my way out the door so I lied and said I had a dress protector/bag in my car. I knew I shouldn’t have kept it in the tight plastic sheath DB gave it to me in, and figured I should look around for something else. Fast forward a couple months and I finally got around to doing alterations and a newer slightly bigger plastic bag is around my dress..

The seamstress told my mother and I that all I needed was to wrap a blanket around it?? That..that doesn’t sound right to me. Can I really protect this costly gown with just a blanket? I bought a dress bag (acid free?) on amazon (pic below) but I was wondering what y’all do? Did you just stick it in a bag like that and call it a day until your big day or is there something else I should do to protect my gown? My wedding is in the beginning of February so I want to avoid any mistakes where I can with so much time between now and then since I’m not really going to be taking it out anymore until the day of (Should I get moth balls?).

Dress bags? Blankets?? Is there something else i should be storing my dress in?? 1

Is this actually enough??

I bought the $10 DB bag and my dress has been there since April of last year. No issues with it that I know of. Came out for alterations, back in afterwards. No yellowing, nothing.

I bought a garment bag for dresses off Amazon similar to the one you pictured.

I’ve been reading so much about how this or that product will either stain or “eat your dress”, I guess I’ve just been overwhelmed with articles at this point :,D Wanted to hear from real brides their opinions haha Thank you for your reply!

The bag you have should be fine as long as it is out of direct light and in a low-moisture area (i.e. don’t store it in a basement or bathroom). That bag will not be adequate for long-term, archival storage. Your bigger issue is making sure the dress is hung to minimize wrinkles and stress on the fabric. For example, my dress is not full, so I don’t have to worry about the fullness but I have delicate lace shoulders that could tear if I hung the weight of the dress unsupported from a hanger. My seamstress said I should either use the hanging ribbon things or lay it flat. In the end, I decided to hang mine with the waist draped over the pants rod part of a hanger so as not to risk pulls.

Hmmm...I’m currently hanging it in a closet that’s connected to my mother’s master bathroom suite. I guess I should see if I can store it in another room! Thank you for that tip!

Its a strapless gown with a chapel train so would just hanging it by the (..I’m not even sure what to call them. Sewn in ribbon straps? Strings? The things that seem to be for hangers anyway), if hung by those, that should be ok yeah?

Laying it flat is another thing I hadn’t considered. I have a spare bedroom that may work but it does get quite a bit of Texas sun :/

    Thank you for your input!

You should be good hanging it by the ribbon hanger things unless the dress is really heavy. Is there serious strain on where the ribbons are connected to the busy fabric? I didn’t have enough room to lay mine down either. Is the closet connected to the bathroom or directly outside of it? The concern would be the dress getting damp and not drying out.

I personally don’t feel like the dress is *that* heavy but then again, the hanger did snap today when grabbing it.. (I’ve since swapped that out for a wire and poofy fabric hanger) But looking at it I don’t think there’s any bad kinds of tension.

The closet is connected to the bathroom, and by the shower (you have to walk into the bathroom to get to the closet). Yeah I’m thinking now keeping it in another closet somewhere may be safer. I don’t want mildew or something to suddenly spawn on the fabric..oh my!

I also have my dress stored in a garment bag from DB. I haven't had any issues and it's been sitting there for about 6 months!

I got a DB garment bag for another dress and use that one. The only thing I did hear is that the plastic storage bags can actually yellow the dress so I made sure to not store it in that one anymore!

We wrapped my Aunt's tea length dress in unbleached muslin fabric, and laid it flat.

So I just picked my dress up from my final fitting. Wedding is in about a month.

My seamstress told me to store my dress out of the garment bag to avoid wrinkles... which is what I've been doing since I picked it up on Saturday. But something about this isn't sitting right with me. I feel like I may have misunderstood her cuz everybody else seems to be storing theirs in a dark place in the garment bag.

I find that odd too. I’d have thought that airing out the dress maybe a week before or even having it steamed a few nights in advance would take care of wrinkles. Even then keeping it upright in a dress bag would have gravity work with you? Also I’d be afraid to keep it out for a month and risk yellowing and sun damage!

Yeah! I think I'll definitely put it back in the bag when I get home.

Thankfully it's only been out for a couple days!
