Dress arrived at salon & they are pushing me to do a fitting right away...

Terra, on September 24, 2019 at 12:51 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 16

I have just over 8 months until the day of. It's too soon for a fitting right?? But I really know nothing about this stuff, so please tell me your thoughts. Also I'm a little peeved because she's kinda pushy and wants cash only, so that's a red flad to me. But the lady has been in busniess for 30 years and her reviews are amazing. I'm just not sure what to do. Lastly, I have been steadily losing weight over the last year and a half, down 25 lbs! My goal weight is within reach - another 5-10lbs, which I was hoping to achieve by the end of 2019. Can I wait for my fitting?

8 months is way too early for a fitting but maybe they just want you to try it on and take the dress home? Also I’ve always paid cash for alterations as I’ve found most places don’t accept cards.

Okay thanks, I will not worry about the cash part then!

She is definitely pushing for me to do an alteration already she is pretty clear, which is why I am confused because it seems too early to me. Why pay to alter it this early if I am expecting to drop another 5-10lbs in the next 3ish months? I have communicated this to her as well.

I would trust my gut on this one. Can you just pick up the dress and have alterations done somewhere else?

Agreeing with Kelly. 8 months is way too early! I started my alterations about 3 months before. I went yesterday for my final fitting (just to check on things) and picked it up today. My wedding is October 5th. Based on the turn around time for your seamstress, I'd say 2-3 months is plenty of time for alterations.

Yes that is way too early, I would try to find another seamstress if she is insistent on having your fitting now. My first fitting was about 5-6 weeks before my wedding.

Definitely DO go in and try on the dress right away to make sure it came in correctly (I say this as someone whose dress arrived in the wrong color— the try on allowed me to be able to get it fixed!)
but definitely DONT begin alterations this far out. Tell her you are still losing weight and not comfortable making any adjustments yet. If she makes an issue out of that or if it is a problem for her, I’d recommend taking your dress elsewhere for alterations.

Okay thanks this is helpful! Yes I want to make sure it came in right size and color, and I did get the skirt hemmed. SO I will check all those items and discuss that. I will save the alterations and not worry about that yet Smiley smile

Do you have a contract? That seems early and the cash only thing seems odd. My first fitting was 6 months out (when the dress arrived), then I had another fitting 1 month out, and my final one 1 week out.

Maybe she wanted you to try it on just so she could get a visual idea of what alterations will be needed. Idk, I'm trying to give her the benefit of the doubt, since you said she had amazing reviews.

It is too early, especially if you're steadily losing weight. Cash only isn't so weird, a lot of seamstresses do that. But if she's as experienced as you say, she should know it's way too early to start altering a dress.

You might consider reaching out to a few other seamstresses, like a second opinion.

You'll be fine waiting for a fitting! It's on the early side for sure, so you still have time

8 months is entirely too early. Most final alterations are 4-6 weeks before the wedding.

Cash only was really common in my area for alterations, so I wouldnt fret too much about that. They may just want you to come in and try it on (make sure its still YOUR dress, many brides change their minds). Smiley smile

Yikes! Too early. I worked at a salon for a while and the shop said schedule your 1st fitting 6-8 weeks before your wedding date.

I agree that it seems to early for a fitting. My shop called me when my dress came in and there was really no rush for me to come in. I wanted to go in to ensure it was the correct dress (im a paranoid person lol) and that it fit (i gained some weight since buying it). They were happy for me to come in and try it on but reminded me that I won't need to start alterations until 2-3months out.....
