Dress Alterations

Delaney, on June 18, 2019 at 7:02 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 10
Hi! I’ve always envisioned my wedding dress with a very low back. The dress I found has an open back but not as low as I would like. It’s beautiful as is and has so much detail. Should I have the seamstress open it up more or would I loose too much of the detail?

I think it's beautiful (and pretty low) as is, but it's your dress, you should do what you want with it.

You might lose a bit of the detail but the poster above is right; it’s your day and your dress

OMG I love your dress as is! I would be worried about losing a lot of detail or compromising the structure of the dress by changing it.

Your seamstress may refuse so I wouldn't get your heart set on it til she agrees.
I think it's perfect the way it is tho.

I agree that changing the back could substantially change the "structure" of the dress in ways that might not give you the results you want. (For example, given the sheerness of the bodice, the current structure of the skirt -- basically fitted at the natural waistline -- probably helps "hold up" the weight of the skirt/train. If a "very low back" resulted in changing/lowering the waistline in the back, the skirt might not hang the same way because the weight wouldn't be supported as much by fitting more tightly at your waist, and instead would put more weight on the straps....) One of the reasons gowns like this "work" is because they've been carefully structured. If you make alterations that change the underlying "foundation of the dress," you might end up with big changes to things you love about it. Also, I'd expect this kind of alteration to be very expensive, because so many other changes to the structure would be needed.

Personally, I think it is gorgeous as it is and if part of what you love about it is the detailing, I'd leave it as is.

Beautiful dress. If you opened it up more it'll be fine I'd think.but if you left it as is it would still be fine too aha
