Dress alterations

Jennessa, on November 28, 2020 at 9:36 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 5
Hi everyone!

I purchased my dress from David's Bridal. I'll need to get alterations to shorten the dress. Would you recommend going with David's Bridal for the alterations or looking into a local seamstress? If you used David's Bridal before did you feel there pricing was fair?

I bought my dress from David's bridal and I am using them for my alterations as well. I'm using them because I know that if something happens to your dress then they'll replace it at no cost. It definitely depends on what you want though I've seen some people say it's expensive while it wasn't for others.

I would go with David’s just for the reassurance & peace of mind that if something happens to your dress, they replace it.

I did my alterations there and spent $600 to shorten the hem and put a bustle in.. I would have gone somewhere else had I would known it would cost that much. They don't get you the price until everything is pinned up.

Altering a wedding dress is rather expensive, and I think DB has a fair price. Every DB has their own seamstress, and every seamstress’s work is different. You can look at reviews on yelp to see if the seamstress in your DB has a good review. Good luck 🥂

They have charged friends double what they would for a seamstress doing the same series of things. And often suggest or go about something in a less skillful, more time consuming way, which again runs up the bill. ... An example, my student had a separates outfit, and was plus size. A light lacy layer, a satin layer, a lining layer in a gored skirt, the bottom a huge circle skirt, about 200 inches each layer, 3 separate layers. ... The top a single waistband holding all 3 layers, lightly gathered, 34 inches. ..Her estimate, on a skirt o er $200 that she paid $175 for, was $300 for hemming 3 large circle layers. Like it would take 4 + shop hours.
I said, waste of money and sent her to a local tailor with a couple skilled seamstresses. One took off the top waist band, marked and cut all 3 layers at the top, tapering each gored seam at the top, put the 36" waistband on the 3 layers all now 3 inches shorter. Charged a 20 minute consult and fitting fee,$20, every job . And a shop hour $75 to do it, though my intern waited, and it took 40 minutes. She charged $95. DB wanted to cut and hem over 600 inches at the bottom, $300. That is like a 26 mile ride to a house 3 miles from the airport, running up a fee proposing the most ridiculously long way to do it. Over and over I have heard outrageous prices. It varies DB to DB, like the service in general.
