Dress alterations?

Emma, on March 11, 2020 at 12:53 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 18
So I’ve set up my first fitting appointment. I called and told them my wedding was October 3rd this year, and the asked if I wanted to come in on March 20th?!? That seems WAY to early, my weight fluctuates all the time; I’m currently losing weight. I told them I’d like to schedule it for June 27th instead. Is that to late? I’ve always hurt to schedule your first fitting at least 3 months in advance. Should I leave it how it is or switch it to the beginning of June instead of the end of June? I need it hemmed, a bustle added, and if I haven't lost enough weight, then a corset added.

I think you can wait til June! I waited til like 4 months before my wedding for my first fitting. My wedding is in 2.5 weeks and they just started on it!

Oh wow! Did you have to go back in to get re-measured? I’m afraid that I’ll lose or gain weight in between the first and final fitting. I’m unsure if I should move it to like mid July or leave it as is.

My weight also fluctuates a lot and I am also mid losing weight so I was really nervous to make the appointments. But her timeline seemed really realistic. I would not like to have a fitting so far out

So....I bought my dress a size too small with the intent to have it fit by now....and that wasn’t my greatest idea. I’m closer, but it will need to be let out at the widest part of my back.

You have to remember that wedding season is ramping up, and prom season is just getting started. So, seamstresses are usually slammed with a lot of work. That may be why they are having you come in next week. It's only your first fitting. You'll put on your dress, and talk to them about what alterations you want/need. That's when I would tell the seamstress that you are currently still losing weight, so they know what your plan is. Then you probably won't see or talk to your seamstress for a few months, while they work on it. Then you'll have another fitting, to check the progress of your weight loss, and see what, if any, other alterations are needed. Then closer yet, you'll have a final fitting, where the alterations should be pretty much finished.

It's a bit early, but that's not a bad thing. You should feel good that your seamstress is getting you in now, before their workload explodes.

My dress was bought with the intentions of putting a corset in. At the bridal shop they told me it was the perfect size for one and that it’d probably be about $150 ( lots of lace) if I can lose the weight to make it zip I’ll just save the money.

Yea, it’s going to cost me $300 to let it out and add the bustle.

Her suggestion is 7 months the before the wedding. Prom season ( at least around here) is over by the middle of may. I feel like it would be useless to go in now, get measured, and then 3 month later come in with having lost (est) 25lbs and basically have to start all over again.

Maybe I should be planning for a hire alterations budget 😅
I’ve set aside $300 for the hem, bustle and corset. Hopefully it doesn’t go over that!

I see. I had my first alterations appointment at about 4 months out. But I'm not currently losing weight, and my dress fit pretty well already, so it only needed minor alterations. Generally speaking, I always think it's better to go early, rather than to risk not having it done in time. But there are exceptions to this, as in your situation, where you know you'll be losing quite a bit more weight. So, maybe waiting a little is what is best for you. Good luck!

Nothing wrong with going sooner rather than later. And when you're there let her know how much weight you want to lose. Seamstresses know what they're doing and can make the correct alterations for you. Trust them

I also think you can wait. My wedding is May 30 and my first fitting isn't until April 4.

I got married October 5th and started my alterations in August. My dress was done in plenty of time.

My wedding is one week after yours, I picked up my dress and actually want to get my fitting ASAP. However, my shop won't let me schedule an appointment until July.
