Dress Alterations

Katie, on February 18, 2022 at 9:58 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 7

Hey everyone, I just have a quick question. My wedding dress is full lace but the straps on it are a different pattern of lace so I plan to have my alterations lady take them off and then add a thinner strap, but to feel more secure I was wondering about adding an illusion back that wither zips up or buttons up. The back of the dress is open to about my mid back. I would add photos but when I picked the dress out I was about 30 pounds heavier and they are not flattering at all. I just want to know if anyone has added this feature to their dress before and how it turned out?

I worked in bridal for 3.5 years, and I’ve seen a lot of alterations in that time. What you’re describing sounds totally doable, however, illusion doesn’t generally provide a lot of structure or support. It also usually can’t support a zipper because the fabric is too delicate- buttons are much more common. If you like the look of illusion though, I think it’s a great idea! Illusion backs are very pretty. Do you happen to know the designer and name of the dress? If I see a picture of the laces, I might be able to give more accurate advice.

Not off the top of my head and I'm not able to look at the information at the moment. I should have mentioned it as more so a tool to help hold my straps up so they don't slip down? I wore a bridesmaid dress recently that had the exact same front/back that my wedding dress has and the same type of straps I am hoping to put on. Thank you for the information!

Do you think an illusion back would help with the straps though?

It's hard to say without seeing a picture of the dress- my recommendation would be to take pictures, or better yet, bring along the bridesmaids dress you recently wore to your alterations appointment to see if your tailor thinks that a similar back would work on your wedding gown! Depending on the structure and fit of your dress, it may not be necessary to keep the straps up, but your tailor should be able to give you a better idea of if it would help!

Reduce your weight if possible, otherwise, your alteration lady will give you the best suggestion in this case. I think you should put straps on your dress. This will fix your wedding dress.

Reduce my weight? I did say I’ve lost weight but no offense that is not how you start a comment on here….
