Dress alterations problem. Advice?

Maui K, on April 24, 2017 at 1:47 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 18

I'd appreciate some advice, if possible...my dress fits everywhere perfectly, except for the hips. It's too tight on the hips, causing it to bunch up (as you can see in the photo). The seamstress said that if she let out the dress at the hips, it would create more room and get rid of the bunching.

I had (what was supposed to be my final) dress fitting this weekend, and the dress looked the exact same. So the seamstress made me take the dress off and she opened/let out some of the inner layers of the dress (which she should have done the first time)...I tried the dress back on and it was still bunching the same.

I made a suggestions if there was anything that could pull down the most inner layer, similar to how guys wear shirt stays. She said she is going to pull the most inner layer and tighten in/"tack it". So I'm hoping by my next fitting this upcoming weekend it'll be less bunched up.

But, it looks like at this point there will still be some bunching. Continued in comments

Does anyone have any advice? Or is bunching in the dress normal? I feel like it's really ugly and makes the dress not fit me well. I was in tears because she said she was going to charge me to do extra alterations....even though it's to fix the same problem, that she said she was going to fix already Smiley sad

I think a little bunching is pretty common. The only thing I think she could do is try to let it out more other than that I'm not sure what she could do. You look amazing by the way

I would be less concerned with the bunching and more concerned about being able to sit. Have you tried to sit down in the dress yet?

I think this bunching kind of comes with the territory of this style.

Beautiful dress but I see what you are talking about and it would bother me. Mermaid style dresses should have some ease through the hip so you can sit.

Can a layer/ lining be remove to give more room?

Is it too late to do a corset back? The buttons are really cute, but if possible, this might solve the fit issue, because you can adjust it yourself.

I agree with PPs.. have you tried to sit?! Honestly it looks like you won't be able to and that would be a much bigger worry for me than the bunching.

Hi everyone! Thank you so much for the comments. I think I am overthinking it so I appreciate your kind words!

Yes, I have tried sitting. It's not the most comfortable and I can't really lean back but I'm able to sit!

It's too late for a corset back, but thanks for the suggestion Smiley smile

I'll ask about removing some of the lining!

Hey! First of all that's a gorgeous dress and it looks stunning on you. I also learned the hard way that this unfortunately is pretty common with mermaids. I had this exact same problem about a month ago. Mine was pretty bad and I was also on the verge of tears at my appointment. I actually went to Macy's and bought a spanx power short and I really think that's helped smooth it out and help it flow better. I've lost a tad bit of weight in between photos as well . Your bunching really isn't bad.Maybe wearing something underneath might help?

Beautiful dress. I was also going to ask if you had spanx on and if not maybe try a pair, not that you need the slimming, but it helps fabric slide easier over things. If you do, try a high waisted one and see if it helps, it might be the fabric not sliding down against your skin.

    You look gorgeous!

You can always have weights sewn into the lining and gown. It will help pull the gown down when you stand up.

If there are seems in front those should be taken in and the side seems be let out. That's if there is enough to be let out.

Girl it looks great! Mine was having similar issues but it's not strapless and has an open back so I thought that was the problem. My mom kept trying to get them to fix it. Honestly you're gonna be moving around and such I don't think the dress will always fall exactly right. And yes sit in it, definitely glad I did I have a similar figure. I think because of the color of mine I barely noticed it where you see it. The bunching is near my waist...you can kind of see here. But I just took portraits and they were beautiful. So don't worry, I think it looks gorgeous!!!

Hello I am having this problem with my dress and it’s too tight at my hips. Did letting it out work or what did you have to do?
