Dress Alterations - Making the Dress Strapless

Emma, on January 23, 2019 at 11:49 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 2
Hello!

I have been planning on wearing my moms wedding dress. It is very late 80s complete with puffy sleeves and excessive lace. I have always imagined just cutting the lace overlay off of the top and making it strapless, keeping the sweetheart neckline.

**The picture is just to give an idea what it looks like. It’s been photoshopped, mostly to remove the sleeves, because one option would be just altering the lace part. I just love the idea of the strapless dress so much, I want to try to make it work if I can.

The problem: the only support the bodice has is the lace top. Boning or some other support would need to be added to the Dress in addition to the other Alterations needed. Altering the dress to be strapless may be more challenging than I thought.

Has anyone had alterations similar to this done? How much did it cost? Before and after pictures are always helpful. Thank you for any help, suggestions, input!!

I'm of the mindset that with the right seamstress ANYTHING is possible, but at a price. I'd suggest researching your options for a well-reviewed professional and making an appointment for a consultation to get an idea of what can be done and what it will likely cost. You're right, changing it to a strapless dress is going to require a ton of "infrastructure" be built into the bodice. I've seen photos of some amazing remade dress transformations on these forums, but it's generally not a simple or inexpensive job. It is quite possible the alterations will cost more than buying a new dress, so don't go this route primarily because you think it will be less expensive; if your motivation is sentimental, then, awesome, go for it. Good luck!

I have no idea about cost but I love that someone is still wearing their mom's dress. I wish that wasn't a fading trend. Good for you!

I love the look of keeping the lace the way you have it photoshopped!
