Dress alterations -how soon to do them?

Kelly, on August 12, 2022 at 1:01 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 3
I just bought my dress for March 2023 wedding. I know for sure it will need a major hem, shoulders/bust brought up/adjusted, and probably let out a little bit. I'm really short and my torso is shorter, hence the hem and shortened shoulder/bust area, and my dress almost zips/clips all the way up (it's a tight squeeze and doesnt quite clip all the way) so maybe 1 inch let out I would assume. When I bought it the lady asked my normal pants size and thats the size she wrote down for me to order. I'm worried they won't be able to let it out. I recently lost 15lbs without much effort, so it's possible I'll continue to lose weight so I don't want to get it altered too early just in case. But my weight loss has stopped for the past 1-2 months so I may not lose anymore. I'm worried the dress won't fit and I don't want to wait too long and they not be able to get it altered in time. Dress was bought from David's Bridal and they have me coming in for alterations 7 weeks prior to wedding --too soon, too late, or just about right in terms of timing my alterations fitting?

Generally you want to go for alterations around 6-8 weeks before your wedding because there is such thing as alterations being done too far in advance so that sounds about right to me.

If it helps, my wedding was 12 December 2021 and I had my dress hemmed, a bustle added, the hips taken out a little, boning added to the bodice and straps added to my dress. Alterations began on 6 October 2021 and I picked the dress up on 29 November 2021 but we had also just come out of a 2 year lockdown so my seamstress asked me to come early just to ensure she could fit me in since there were a lot of postponed weddings coming up at that time along with ours.

I went in for my alterations appointment 2 months before (I believe it was about 9 weeks). I am picking it up next week (5 weeks before) giving us time if anything extra needs done.

I also bought my dress at davids bridal! My store recommended about 4 to 6 weeks before the date of the wedding for alterations. I scheduled mine for July 2nd (8 weeks before the date) and got my dress back on July 29th. I had the bust taken in, upper (7) and lower (9) bustles put in, and the dress shortened by around 4 or 5 inches. I felt this was an appropriate amount of time especially if something didn't fit I could have sent it back and been a-okay! Best of luck!
