Dress alterations - how much does it cost?

Christina, on February 2, 2022 at 3:59 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 11
The bridal salon where I purchased my wedding dress has an in-house seamstress that could do any alterations for me. I was quoted about $450 or greater. I do see the convenience of getting everything done all at the same place, but I honestly have no what’s customary price-wise. How much should I expect to pay for alterations on average? How much did you pay? What kind of shop did you go to? Also, if anyone is from the South Suburb Chicago area, I’ll gladly accept recommendations!

What do you need done? I spent right around that for my alterations (hem on a 3 layer dress, zipper to corset, and two sets of cups sewn in) about 30 miles north of Boston.

No one can really give you a guideline as to the anticipated costs of alterations because the costs can vary greatly depending on the dress itself (i.e. beading, lace, how many layers of fabric etc) and the alterations you need.

If it helps, I had a lace and beaded mermaid style gown and I had the dress hemmed, boning added to the bodice as well as straps custom made for the gown and a bustle added and that cost me $600 AUD (about $425 USD).

I went to a private seamstress who added an 8 point bustle, bra cups, and took up the straps and it was $290.

I had a private seamstress quote me $400. I ended up going with a different seamstress who also owned her own dry cleaners and tailoring shop. She did a flat fee of $550 for any wedding dress no matter how simple or intricate the dress was. I’m in NJ

I have lost a lot of weight since I bought my dress so it will have to be taken in a lot and who knows what else. I’ll just set aside I good chunk of money in case. Thanks for the ballpark figures. Appreciated!!

I went to a private seamstress my family has used for other alterations. She frequently has wedding dresses in her rack of items to be picked up so we knew she had experience altering them. I just needed the shoulders straps shortened and for the dress to be hemmed. No lace or detailing on the bottom edge but it is 7 layers in total (3 tulle, 2 crinoline, and two fabric). Total was $350. I'm in Virginia.

I went to David's Bridal and I spent about $200 for just the hem and bustle. Alterations seem expensive...but are kinda needed...

Some brides have skipped getting a bustle and been fine for the ceremony and reception. One used a loop on the end of the train for going across the lawn for pictures and a few other instances and was fine without the bustle.
