Dress Alterations Feedback

Kiley, on September 26, 2019 at 9:09 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 15

A little backstory.. I never saw myself wearing a mermaid/trumpet style dress, but when my mother-in-law asked to see just one on when I went dress shopping, I fell in love! The dress (on the right) was a size too small at the time, so I bought the next size they had available (which was two sizes too big)... I have lost roughly 13 pound since then (as you can tell by my chubby face in the right photo) and my seamstress has to take the dress down four sizes on the top and two in the waist... Now, my dress is still undergoing alterations, but I am suppose to have what I thought would be my last fitting this Saturday.. As I looked back on photos from my appt two weeks ago, I kept thinking something seemed off with the bottom of the dress.. My FMIL has said at two alterations appts now that the dress needs to be taken in more at the hips and below, but the seamstress is saying that the material is not stretchable (it's satin) and that I won't be able to sit down. After relooking at photos and finding the photo from when I said yes to my dress, I am thinking my FMIL is right and that the dress needs to come in more to prevent it from looking like it is just hanging there.. Below is a side by side of the two and the dress on the model.. Looking for advice/opinions! This has literally kept me up all night! Haha!

I agree. After the alterations, it looks more like an a-line than a trumpet. I would show the seamstress the before photo, maybe a visual will help her understand.

This might be a slip-issue more than an alterations issue. If it’s satin, it’s not going to puff out on its own without something structural underneath — in the store and in photos they may have had an extra crinoline layer in the bottom for effect. I would try purchasing a trumpet style slip (they’re fitted at the waist and pouf out at the bottom) and see if it does the trick.

I wondered that. I purchased a slip on Amazon last night and will have it in time for my fitting Saturday. Hopefully it does the trick!

Try your dress with a trumpet slip! It will flare it out like it is in your photos.

I just ordered one off of Amazon. I will be here in time for my fitting on Saturday, so I will start with it to see if it makes a difference before any more alterations.

It does look less tight if that's an accurate way of stating it. i mean i honestly still think you look gorgeous but it does look different from when you tried it on at the bottom.

If the look you’re going for is the one on the model, I would say the dress definitely needs to be taken in in the hips! Right now, the dress on you looks more like an A-line. I would take these three pictures in to the seamstress and show her exactly what you’re talking about.

Exactly what I was going to say! I work at DB, all the models online always wear a slip under the dress because they want you to buy the slip, obviously. I would go back to DB, or where ever you can find a slip and try it on before you seamstress makes any permanent fixes. She is right, you will have a hard time sitting down in the dress if you pull it in too tight. Plus it’s satin which has no give/stretch. BUT, it is all about the look! I sat for maybe 20 minutes at my wedding so maybe that just isn’t important to you 🤷🏼‍♀️ Good luck!

Thank you! I am willing to sacrifice sitting, haha. But I will definitely start with the slip. I sent the photos to my mom, who was there when I found my dress, and neither of us could remember if I had the slip on in that picture.. our guess was yes.

Congrats on your weight loss you looks amazing! I think it looks great on you! But it definitely lost its mermaid style - I would talk to the seamstress. She can take it in just a little bit and still give you some room to breathe. Even show her to before photo when you said yes. especially since you're paying her for alterations you want it to at least look like what you purchased!
