Dress alterations advice!

Laura, on May 12, 2020 at 4:46 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 15

I received my dress and I am in love. It has a zipper in the back. It wouldn't zip but I know that wedding dresses really aren't meant to zip yourself. However, I had a bad feeling. So, I checked the measurements of the dress and the size chart. It turns out that the size chart wasn't correct. Long story short - my dress is 2 inches too small from chest to hip.

Can a corset back or it being let out help me? Maybe both? Suggestions. I won't find another dress like this one and I'm in love... There will also be enough lace to add panels ('m short - 5'1").

Suggestions or ideas? Has anyone else had to deal with this? What did you do?

I dealt with this! It was always a bit snug because I'm a busty lady, so she was able to actually expand the zipper. Zipped up perfectly after that. Depending on the dress you might be able to add a corset. I would talk to a seamstress and see what your options are.

I love the before and after. I just hope we can get 2" out of my dress. I know they can usually be let out 1-3" which is the sweet spot for where I need my dress to be. Fortunately, I was able to compare the measurements of one to the measurements on David's chart (I bought an anniversary dress from them), so I know how badly it's off. This is the ulcer I didn't need right now.

If its David's you should be fine!!! I haaated the back of that dress, but when I tried it on I didn't realize it was sheer because it wouldn't zip. But yeah, I gain or lose five pounds depending on the time of the month, so I went into a fitting and she called me fat. 🙄 Basically implied I had gained that much weight in two weeks between fittings. I was like "Giiiiirl...." She let out the zipper for free after my mom called up the alterations line and gave them a new one. 😆😎 I would take a deep breath and try it on again.

My dress is Pronovias... I got it at a steal. I'll cry if we can't fix it. I used David's size chart because I knew I fit in their dresses and my size. So I compared that to the Pronovias chart... and it was off by 2" from what was shared with me. I hope it all works out... Sniffles.

This is so much stress during Covid - I can't even get to the seamstress to figure it out. :'(

I need to see pictures of your dress again, but I would assume they can figure it out!!! Just breathe. She performed magic on a zipper that was hardly visible, so I think they can figure out your dress too.

Yes, you can add a corset back! I have a party dress with a satin corset back, because I am 4”7 short but my girls won’t fit into 12 years old party dresses. Depending on the width of your back, the corset shouldn’t be too wide to avoid taking too much of your dress design.

This is the back, I always thought it could use a little something... Maybe a corset back can be placed there... gulp.

    Greetings.

I would definitely go with the corset back. That way, you will have the additional leeway to expand the dress even if it still does not fit after the alterations. Plus, it never hurt anybody to have that added flair of a corset. They are so pretty to me.

You should definitely discuss with the seamstress about the material you want to use, how wide, and how long.
