Dress alteration question

Cynthia, on June 8, 2019 at 3:41 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 21
So I have a weird question I’m hoping someone on here will have the answers too. I was given a dress, unaltered size 12, that I can alter and wear for the wedding. I’m not in love with the dress but free is budget friendly. Problem is, I’m no where near a size 12. My street size is 2-4. Is it possible and would it even be cost efficient to alter the dress down? If it’s going to be $600+ to alter it I’d rather go and get something I love. I called one alteration shop who said they won’t take it in more then 2 sizes but if someone has experience and say it can be done I can call others...

thank you!

Dresses can only be altered 2-4 sizes down, otherwise you change the entire form of the dress and it gets ruined.

It's easy to take in a dress, so you should be fine! If you were trying to take out the dress, that'd be a little more challenging

My dress was taken in more than 2 sizes but that’s because my bust and waist measurements were 5 sizes apart. Alterations are expensive on a dress that doesn’t have to be basically remade so I would get a new dress.

It really depends largely on the dress and how it's made. Some are easier to take in than others. Your best bet would be to talk to a seamstress, but odds are you might be able to find a dress you love in your size for the cost of alterations, either in a store or check Poshmark.

I agree, my mom is a seamstress/tailor and she told me about my dress not to lose too much weight cuz she wouldn’t be able to take it in. they told me to order a size 22 at the dress shop but I ordered a size 18, after 5 weeks I got to the point of being able to zip it, my mom said ok just lose enough so that you can wear it while sitting.

Honey find a dress you love more than like. Dont worry about the category of "wedding dress" so that right there could save you hundreds. Im sure there is something better than having to get a dress altered that much because it's free.

It would be cheaper to buy another dress. Can you post a pic of the dress and the style of dress that you actual like? I'm sure the WW ladies can point you in the right direction

This is the style I’m aiming for, I don’t have a picture of the other dress but it’s completely different, strapless A-line with floral details. It’s not about making one look like the other though, it’s about whether or not a size 12 can be altered for a size 4ish which sounds like a “maybe but it will be way expensive” answer. I’m on board with budget friendly options (I honestly could wear a sack and only mind a little cause I get to marry the man of my dreams) but free and $$$$ in alternations is not preferred of a reasonably priced dress and alterations.

Have you tried it on to see how much bigger it is than your street size? Bridal sizing is very different from street sizing. A bridal size 12 could actually fit closer to a street size 6 depending on the dress.

I wear a 7/8 for "street sizing." I'm wearing an 8 as a bridesmaid this year for my friend's wedding. However, my wedding dress is labeled a 14. Bridal sizing is ridiculous.

What I'm saying is you will likely be totally fine!

Yes I’ve tried it on, it only stayed on because the skirt holds it up 🤣 I was swimming in it. But I may call a few more alteration shops to see what is possible.

I know they are way different in sizing options, I don’t get it (although I know the history of women’s sizing so I’m not surprised) clothing sizing sucks! Guys have no idea how lucky they are. Lol

It really does! My consultant prefaced it by saying, "You are TOTALLY not this size, so don't freak out. We recommend a 14."

The struggle is real, ladies! I’m a street size 2, my boobs were a 10 and my waist a zero so I had to go with the 10. They said they’d just take it in on the waist

I have an appointment next Friday with an alterations specialist to see if it can be done and how much it would cost to do so. I’ll know then 😁
