Dress Advice

WESLEY, on May 22, 2020 at 1:24 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 6

I know everyone's situation during this COVID-19 pandemic is different, so I pray for all of you brides-to-be!

Postponing my wedding is not what I had envisioned. Our original wedding date was 7/17/20, but we have members of our immediate family spread out across the country and many family members in the high-risk age groups of contracting COVID, which would make it extremely difficult to keep this date. I am thankful that all my vendors are working with us, and we have postponed our date until next July. Now, I get to plan an even better wedding!

However, my fiance and I have been dating for a little over 7 years. We have been planning for our first child for about a year now (since we got engaged last January) and were hoping to have our first child by next summer. We can only get married in the summer because most of our family, including us, are teachers.

Due to religious reasons, I really wanted to be married before having children. We have our blessing to get married this summer in an intimate setting, just the two of us, but our family would like us to have a renewal ceremony of some sort next summer and want to see me in my original dress.

Now I'm stressing out over my dress. My concern is, if I do get pregnant this year and have a child before next summer, I do not think my ballgown will fit. Should I get fitted in the dress now (my first fitting is June 2nd) and hope that I can get it re-altered for next year's ceremony, or is it wise to find another dress because of my pregnancy plans?

Any help would be nice, thanks!!

Hmmmm, what I would honestly do is purchase another dress, since alterations can be a pain in the arse to deal with. You could get an affordable dress online using Azazie or Cocomelody perhaps.

I agree with PP, a second dress might be a better option whether you decide to use the second dress for your ceremony or vow renewal. Trying to alter a dress after a pregnancy can be difficult from what I’ve heard, but what if you are pregnant at the time of your vow renewal? That would make it all the more stressful on you to fit into a dress. Good luck!

Thanks so much for your response! You do bring up a great point. I am not so sure if I want to alter a dress and then have to re-alter it again a year from now. I heard that alterations can get expensive and having to do it twice to the same dress seems a bit much.

Thanks so much for your response! I agree, I am not so sure if I want to take that risk. I might be wearing my original dress this summer, and then a simpler flowy dress with flexible/stretchy fabric for next year. I really wanted to walk down the aisle with my dad in my ballgown. It is Mikado fabric with lace appliques. I am not sure how my seamstress will be able to alter a dress like that if I am pregnant next summer. But, the sliver line to all of this is I get to marry my best friend and we get to celebrate twice!!

Hi Wesley! I'd try not to stress yourself out too much over this!! It's impossible to know exactly where you'll be in family planning next year and how your body will respond!

I would get your wedding dress altered to fit you now so you feel amazing on your wedding day! Smiley heart If you are getting anything taken in you can always ask the alterations team if they can leave the extra fabric in the seams - in anticipation of potentially letting it back out in the future!

Hi Lynnie! Thank you so much for your response. I did more thinking, and you're right! It makes sense to get it altered to fit me now!

I believe I will need some of the fabric to be taken in, so I will be sure to ask my seamstress if she can leave some extra fabric in the seams. Thanks again! Smiley heart
