Dream Ring is too tight!

Sloan, on December 12, 2021 at 7:19 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 6
For YEARS I have been eyeing my dream ring. We finally were able to purchase it. I customized it to my liking and (im)patiently waited 5 weeks for its arrival.

Last night my husband finally gave it to me in a super sweet proposal (which we never had 10 years ago)
Here’s the thing… the ring is .25 too small! My knuckles are literally swollen from removing it (twice) last night.
Because it’s a Sunday basically no one was able to help me so it’ll have to wait until tomorrow.
Has this happened to anyone else?

Yep! Mine was about .15 too small, got a blister on my knuckle from taking it off. Took it to a family trusted jeweler and they were able to shave off a tiny amount of metal from all around the inside of the ring, and it has been perfect ever since!

Mine isn't too small. We ordered it in the smallest size, a 5, knowing it would need to be resized to a 4.5. The salesperson told me it would be 3 months to get a custom-sized ring, or 2 weeks to get the ring in a 5 and resize it. It ended up taking a month, and when I got it, it became very clear after we left that it was NOT resized. Fortunately, we didn't pay anything extra for the resizing, and I'm currently pregnant so we decided to keep it as is in case my fingers swell. I just want to know what they did with my ring for those extra weeks if it wasn't resized xD

As long as its not a full eternity band, you shouldn't have an issue having it resized 1/4 size. My e-ring was a full size too big, but I had it resized at the jeweler it was purchased from and its perfect now.

If possible, I would use the same jeweler since it needs to be made bigger and some material will need to be added. You want to make sure the exact same alloy is used to ensure a flawless result.

Also, if you were pretty certain of your size to begin with you may just want to make sure the size is correct (like the ring you got is standard to the size you expected, any jeweler can measure this using a ring sizing mandrel) and also that you didn't just have an unusual "fat finger" day. If you had a lot of salty foods or you were in a particularly hot environment, your fingers just may have been atypically swollen when you tried it on. Since you've only had it a day it sounds like, I would try it on again over the course of a few more days (don't force it, but see if it slips on like it should) to see if the fit improves. It's normal for your fingers to fluctuate slightly.

    UPDATE:

I ended up going to Jared's because they offer a 6-month guarantee on any work done by their jewelers. By 6 pm my ring was ready to go (same day!)
I think the mistake was I had my ring sized by a kiosk jeweler at the mall instead of going to an actual store (no offense to these kiosks) but when I got sized Jared's said I was a size 5- not 4 like the lady at the mall had said.

Either way, it was $300 extra but at least I can wear my ring proudly instead of carrying it around in my purse with disappointment. Thank you all for your responses! I felt way less alone.

    You are not alone.

I used plastic "at home" ring sizers to size myself and ended up with the wrong size. I measured myself a number of times and always measured a 6.5 except one time when I measured a 7, so now hubby got me a 7 just to be safe. It was way too big!

I knew I had to get it resized but wanted to get the size right, especially since my ring is rose gold, which is more prone to cracking when resized and cannot as easily be resized multiple times compared to white gold or yellow gold. Went to three different jewelers to get "professionally measured" and was told I was a 6 or 6.5 at Kay Jewelers, which didn't have quarter sizes, and 5.75 at both of the local jewelry shops. I was worried a 5.75 would be TOO snug (I use my hands a lot so HAVE to be able to get my ring off and cannot just have my ring get stuck on me on "fat finger" days), so I bought two inexpensive rings on Etsy in a size 5.75 and 6 and wore each for a few days before deciding. Ended up having my e-ring resized to a 6 and its perfect!

It was a lot of effort to get the right size but I don't worry at all about my ring falling off (or getting stuck) now.
