Dream dress dilemma

Rabreena, on October 12, 2020 at 5:28 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 13

I need thoughts and opinions, please help!

My wedding date isn't until October 2021, but working in a CPA I have tax deadlines all throughout the year which make it difficult to have open availability to go dress looking/shopping, so I decided the earlier the better for me.
Ever since I started even looking online and came across the designer Kitty Chen, I instantly became obsessed!! It seemed like everything that I ever wanted and am looking for in a dress this designer hit all the markers, especially once I came across her dress "Candice" (pictures below)! Oh my word, I thought I was obsessed before, but now I know for sure I am! I looked up stores that are in my area that carry this designer and asked them if they happened to have this dress in stock, and they said no. Although one location did say that if I wanted to pay $100, they would order the dress in order for me to try. The only thing about it though is that they don't have any control over what size and color it comes in. I am dying to be able to try this dress on, but don't know if I should pay that fee. What if I do and it doesn't live up to all the expectation and hype I have given it? What if it happens to come in too small to try on or too small to where I can't picture how it would actually fit?
I had 2 appointments last weekend of trying on dresses, and out of all the ones I tried on I didn't ever feel the "I love this dress" moment, so I have 2 more this weekend. I am trying to keep an open mind and not solely focus on this dream dress, but also not ruin the experience of trying different dresses on.
I feel like a mixed bag of emotions and unsure what to do!

I would personally not take a chance on a dress where they cannot guarantee the sizing I just would not. I think you would feel worse if the dress did not fit you well and sometimes alterations cannot fix everything. You could get it altered if needed I am sure but it is a risk.

Agree with PP. I would not pay $100 for a dress that might be way too complicated or too expensive to alter it to fit me. I like to see, touch, try it on before I order the dress. I am too picky and I don’t want surprises, such as quality issues. Maybe shop around before you decide to “gamble” with that $100? Maybe you’ll find something you like better.

I am guessing you don't live in So Cal? I searched it and it seems where I got my dress from has it. San Diego area.

I wouldn't pay $100 just to try on a dress especially given that they can't even tell you want size or color the dress would come in for you to try on.

Is the $100 a fee or deposit? Are they ordering a sample for you to try on or ordering a dress that you’d have to buy? I think I’d try to find similar dresses that are available to try on before spending the $100 (and only if I wasn’t required to then buy whichever dress shows up). I’d like to know for example that I liked the way I looked on a dress with similar neckline or similar fit or similar level of detail.

That dress is gorgeous. I say go for it or you may always have regret about not trying on your possible dream dress

Oh my gosh, that dress is absolutely gorgeous! 😍 I can see why you like that designer. I would see if you could call around to other store as well within a 20-30 mile radius first. But then If it's only $100 just to try it on, I say do it. This is your wedding, and you're only going to get that "aha moment once. You don't want to settle on a dress and always wonder what if. If this is the dress of your dreams, but you don't spend the $100 on it to make sure, you could regret it.

I hope once you try it on, you’ll have your answer! I think it’s worth the 100$ to get it to the nearest store. If you do purchase it from then, maybe you could negotiate adding that as a deposit or towards price of gown. It’s a beautiful dress! Best wishes

Well $100 is not a huge amount of money so if you want to take the risk you should. But honestly this company seems kinda sketchy to me, its not sold in any stores and the one store that has it makes you pay to try on and cant order the right size. I’d first check to see what their reviews online say

I actually had the same issue! I found one specific dress I wanted to try on and five others I was interested in, but none of my local bridal stores had any of them and said they would charge 100$ per dress if I wanted to ship them in (money would go towards a dress if I bought one, otherwise out of &dollarSmiley winking. I finally called a shop 2 hours away in Pennsylvania who worked with me and were able to order all 5 of my dresses to their store for FREE as part of a trunk show they were having! Not only did I end up buying one of those dresses, but I also got a 15% discount as part of the trunk show! I would look for stores that may have a trunk show for the designer, or if you are in the PA area, I can give you the name of the botique I went to! They were AMAZING and totally worth the drive!

This. If it's a refundable deposit or can go towards whichever dress you eventually do purchase, that seems reasonable. If you're going to be locked into that specific item and it's a color you hate or can't be properly altered, that's concerning.

I guess what it really comes down to is, what does $100 mean to you? I've spent $100 on dinner or a night out plenty of times... sometimes it has been completely worth it and sometimes not (once at a bachelorette party we walked into a bar, ordered a round of shots, and they handed me a check for $90... fastest and least satisfying 100 bucks I've ever spent). So, is $100 worth it to try on what you say is your dream dress? Are you going to regret not doing it?

I don't think the $100 is sketchy. I had this offered to me a couple of times when I was shopping for dresses - they don't have a sample, but they can order it from the designer. The $100 is most likely the shipping cost involved with that. I would be very surprised if they tried to lock you into that dress, or if the fee would be applied to the dress you eventually chose (would be less surprised about the latter).

If I were you, OP, I would look harder to see if you can find a store that carries that dress. I would be hesitant to spend the money if they didn't couldn't at least narrow down the size they would get.

But if you really like it, and would regret not trying it on, go for it.
