Dos and Donts with Djs?

Sam, on August 13, 2019 at 12:37 PM Posted in Planning 0 6
Hi everyone!

I was just just reaching out to see if anyone had any advice when it comes to booking a DJ. Music is very important to us and we’ve been to some weddings with bad DJs.

Is there anything you wished you knew when you were booking yours? Anything you would recommend looking for or avoiding?

Amy advice is greatly appreciated!

We have been to so many weddings and when we finally got engaged, every wedding we went to after that we paid close attention to the details (centerpieces, timeline, start time, end time, DJ, photographer, meals, you name it). If we liked the way the DJ or photographer looked we asked the couple for their information after the wedding or approached them for a business card. This is how we found our DJ. We already knew how he operated because we have seen him in action at a wedding and when we met with him to discuss and sign a contract he was still the way he was as a DJ, very outgoing and happy and was all around a great person. He was super excited to DJ our day and be there to celebrate and was throwing out ideas and things like that at the meeting. He made us feel really good about our decision.

I would have a list of songs you definitely want to have, first dance, bride and her father, groom and his mother etc. I would also make sure to talk to him about songs you don't want played under any circumstances. it's your day

Our DJ was super important to us too! We read a TON of reviews on tons of sites, and talked on the phone about the feel we wanted, music we liked, etc. to see which ones had the best vibe for us. Overall, we were super happy with our DJ!

My advice would be to speak with your venue. My venue had a list of vendors they work with frequently. They recommended one above the rest because of his small setup. We looked at the packages of all the DJs and the one they recommended also happened to be a musician. So it was a no brainer for us.

I just looked for a reputable DJ company in my area with a good price. They have been in business for quite some time and have good reviews. I booked, but I have yet to even meet them. DJ really wasn't a big priority to me because all they need to do is play the music I pick and announce some stuff. To me that's not rocket science. I haven't ever gone to a wedding and thought wow that DJ sucks at speaking or talks too much or whatever. The only wedding where the DJ was kinda lame was a Sunday afternoon brunch and that probably wasn't his fault; the vibe wasn't for dancing everyone just rather mingled outside.

We made a list of songs we ABSOLUTELY want to have played, and a list of DO NOT play songs lol. I was so particular about what music to play, because it really sets the entire mood. We love oldies (pink floyd, Niel Young etc). I didn't trust anyone to pick songs for the reception so I'll be providing the list to our dj in no particular order, but organized it by songs for the receiving line, the cake cutting, and first dance. Also made a list for the dance floor
