Donuts versus Cake?

Victoria, on February 15, 2020 at 1:06 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 18

Okay, ladies. I feel like this has been chatted about **** times, BUT I need some opinions.

We are having a BRUNCH wedding in late October, reception runs 12pm-4:30pm. Brunch food and Brunch cocktails. There will be no more than 80 people in attendance (including vendors), as in: we are only INVITING 80 people at most. Including LOTS of kiddos.

The issue: Donuts versus Cake! Given the time of day and that it's Brunch- what do y'all think is best? Would people even want a traditional wedding cake at that time of day?

Important to note: FH and I are NOT cake fans, we just aren't. We will eat cake, but it's just not our thing at all. This includes cupcakes and literally any other form that cake can take.

We've had one cake tasting so far, at the insistence of my mother (ugh). It was okay, we preferred the almond cake with a raspberry fruit filling- and the "naked" type cake with minimal frosting. That baker is a cost of $3.75 per person. We are consulting with 2 other bakers though and having a few other tastings (one being a Maple cake!).

I reached out to a local (AMAZING) donut shop to see what they could offer. They make cider donuts and I cannot even tell you how BOMB they are. They have a few different varieties, all excellent.

They have a Donut Display package. I'd get 1.5 regular (or 2 mini) donuts per person. It comes with the display of my choosing, design and staging, and bags (I may order personalized bags though, from Etsy). They charge $3 per person, which I think is a steal. I'd probably even order some additional donuts, to get around 200 donuts (320 if mini). So, it'd work out to about $350-400 for all of that, maybe less. A bit more expensive than the cake, but meh.

I'm just wondering what you all think. I feel like I'd still want the "cake cutting" picture (it would be private, so no one would be around)- so I *may* get a small cake for that, unless anyone has any cute ideas for how to do that with donuts...

PS: if I did the donuts- I'm wondering if I *should* do additional favors or just have the donuts double as dessert AND the favor? We planned on doing Hershey Kisses as our favor, nothing super fancy at all. We could still do them, in the interest of not being "tacky"- but like...if I do donuts I really don't want to?

I'd appreciate ANY of your guys thoughts, suggestions, input. Not even joking, this freaking cake situation has been the most stressful so far Smiley sad

Honestly, if you guys like the donuts more (which you totally do!), get the donuts! No one is going to whisper about how there isn't any cake at your wedding. I've been to a lot of wedding recently where people went the cookie/donut way, and it was honestly a lot easier to distribute and clean up after. The day is about you and your FH, why get something you two aren't excited about, right? Smiley smile

I would totally say just get donuts BUT since you want the cake pic.... I would go ahead and order the donuts and a small bakery wedding cake as well. I think it would look beautiful on your dessert table together! You could just have a sheet cake in the back to feed everyone a slice of cake if they want. Our fancy schmancy bakery has 2 tier cakes that start at $145 so I don't think this option would be terribly pricey. Just my opinion, you can never go wrong with just donuts! Good luck!

That was my fault, and who doesn't love donuts?!

Do you think the donuts could double as a favor- or should we still do the Hershey kisses?

I will be honest because I didn't read all of this post haha. I would just say have both. Why don't you do a cake that you and your fiance could cut into and then have some donuts below for the guests? That way you two have the cake cutting experience on film and then the guests can get donuts serve to them instead.

I love cake! Cake is perfect for brunch. But honestly, if you like donuts better, why not both?

Hey. I’m also having a brunch reception! I vote in favor of the donuts since it’ll make you and your fiancé happy and that’s most important; and they can definitely double up as favors. Favors are necessary if they don’t fit in the budget. Lots of brides and grooms say edible favors are best as anything else may be left behind. For the cake, I’m actually going to have a stack of waffles which we will do a pouring of syrup in place of “cutting the cake”; but for my guests, they will get cupcakes. So, you can always have the best of both worlds if you do want to appease your mother and/ or any other guests. Also, depending how cheesy you want to go or how casual your wedding will be you can do a splitting/breaking apart of the a donut where each you and your FH have hold of one side of the donut. Good luck!

I'm a cake fan, and especially for a wedding, I'd be looking forward to cake. Most brunches include some kind of baked goods, so I wouldn't be surprised for there to be mini donuts and/or muffins as part of the brunch offerings, but I'd still be expecting cake as dessert. I could definitely eat cake in the afternoon....

I think having donuts would be such a cute idea! I love donuts so if I went to a wedding and there were donuts instead of cake I’d still be happy. I like the “non-traditional” wedding ideas because it’s what makes you and your FH happy and you sounded more excited about them also!

If the brunch has pastries, do the donuts as a favor. If people want to eat there they can. I can bring in desserts from outside so I am doing cupcakes from a local bakery that are $1.50 each and a small two layer cake from them for $55 to have something to cut for pictures. I love cake but fiancé doesn’t.

I say for sure go with donuts—which sound amazing and so appropriate for brunch!

But I really don’t understand why you’d do a cake photo when you don’t even like cake...?

For me, I'd prefer cake than donuts at a wedding.

We did both. We had a small 2 tier cake and a variety of donuts. Plus other desserts.

Donuts. Do it. We are having a breakfast wedding. 11am to 330pm. Full on breakfast buffet with a pancake station. And donuts instead of cake.
I've been trying to decide if we still want to try to do some sort of cake cutting. Probably not but we will see
