Donuts instead of cake

Miranda, on January 12, 2022 at 6:19 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 8
We are discussing doing donut holes or donuts instead of a wedding cake. My only concern is that they could get dried up before it is time for that part during the reception. So I was wondering if anyone did this idea and what were your thoughts about it? Any tips for doing this would also be helpful. Thanks!

I’ve never actually been to a wedding that has done this before, but I did see it on one of the reality wedding TV shows. On the show, the wedding coordinator had one of her assistants placing the donuts on the donut wall in the reception space during the ceremony, so that they would be fresh when guests enter the room.

They would need to be delivered minutes before they are set out. Also not all donuts are intended for a wall. With Covid you may have people pass it over the same as for the ones who actively avoid buffets. You would need to rent a plexiglass food service guard

A good quality doughnut won't dry out in a few hours and will be absolutely fine, but with that said, if you are worried about the doughnuts drying out, you could even consider going to a chain store (i.e. Krispy Kreme) that use preservatives just to ensure your doughnuts have a bit more in them to withstand being out for whatever period of time they'd be out for prior to dessert.

Also, while we went the traditional cake route ourselves, my husband and I LOVE doughnuts and would be totally stoked about being served doughnuts at a wedding!

We had doughnuts (and pies) in lieu of cake and people loved it. We went to a local bakery, which made them fresh the morning of the wedding, and our DoC picked them up mid-day. She then put them out during dinner (stacked on a tiered tray, not on a wall) and people could help themselves (pre-COVID). It was great.

We went to 6 weddings this year and 4 of them had donuts, so I think I've seen the gamut. I wouldn't be worried about them drying out. For one of the weddings they had picked them up the night before and they were surprisingly still good. If it will be very warm, I'd steer away from frosting as it can make a mess and just look sad. One of the weddings provided little bags so you could grab one for the road and that was super handy!
