Donuts instead of cake!

Leah, on February 7, 2019 at 10:19 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 17
Hi everyone! I’m going to do donuts for the reception instead of traditional cake/cupcakes. We are doing a small cake for us to cut. I’ve been trying to find different ways to set up the donuts with trees, a donut wall, cake stands etc. I would love to see pictures though of what you all did! Let me know what worked or didn’t work well for you! Thanks!

I’m doing the same. We have a small one tier cake just for the tradition of it. Then we’re doing mini pies and doughnuts. I’m going to set them up around the cake and pies. I don’t have a picture of the actual ones I ordered, but they’re kind of like this pictured here.

The one thing to keep in mind when setting things up is how they would have to be touched to get one. No one wants to see a bunch of people touching or breathing on the food they’re about to grab. Personally I would steer clear of the donut wall or stacking them or any of the aesthetically appealing ways and just have them set out on a table (or maybe on a tiered stand) because that’ll make things way easier and way less gross for guests to get their treats.

I thought about doing that but maybe for just the glazed donuts. I wouldn’t want to stack ones with pretty icing and have all the icing be stuck to the bottom of the other donut. But that’s the only idea I ever see on Pinterest lol

I’m thinking of doing tiered cake stands but we’ll have around 200 donuts so I’m not sure there will be enough room and cake stands for them all

We are doing donuts too! I toyed with the idea of a donut wall but decided I didn't want to. Then someone mentioned I could buy a bunch of the coffee mug trees and paint them and hang donuts off of them, which I thought was great! But we only have a small table to incorporate our desserts so that wasn't possible for a small cake and around 200 donuts. So now I am thinking, since we are having a rustic themed wedding, I'm going to use some of the crates I have and put a nice lace liner in them and fill each with a different kind of donut and label each crate with the type of donut and stack them! Goes with our theme, is a space saver, and really looks cute!

Depending on where you're located, think about the temperature in Sept. as well. There was a bride who posted about the frosting on donuts on her donut wall literally melting and dripping off the hanging donuts -- it made a huge mess, and very few people ended-up eating donuts because they looked so unappealing. Personally, I agree with pp's about any display that has people potentially touching the donuts with their bare hands as super unsanitary. Any frosted/glazed donuts that are stacked in any way are going to look messy once a guest removes those on the top of the stack. Also, donuts lose their freshness really quickly, so they'll need to be made/delivered/displayed at the last minute. I think this is something that Pinterest has made look like a cool trend, but the reality might not play out the same way. For a brunch wedding, I think donuts are something to potentially include in the menu, as a dessert at an evening wedding, I think there are definitely drawbacks to consider. Good luck!

That’s very true. Definitely something to keep in mind. It will be an evening wedding and they will be made fresh that day. Thinking about that I’m leaning more towards just putting them on wood slices and cake stands

Oh yeah those are cute! Here's my idea with the crates! Im going to arrange them in an upside down V and have the cake in the center with some flowers and fairy lights around them. Im planning on filling the crates up too not just one layer, but enough room in between where people can grab them fine.

I would skip the cake if you are not planning on serving cake to your guests. It is considered rude for you to have something that you're not offering the rest of your guests. A lot of couples are choosing to skip the cake cutting and have a dessert table instead. If you still want to "cut" something then you could cut a donut in half and feed each other.

I'm planning on a building a tiered stand (pictured below). I want to have a small cake for cutting on the top tier. And then I plan to have some trays on the table surrounding the stand as well.

I was thinking the same since my grandfather used to own a doughnut shop, hope my fiance will agree to the idea!

We're doing donuts too! We are thinking of stacking the donuts on a wooden tree thing and then having our small cutting cake on top.

We had donut towers! I made them using gold chargers and clear candle sticks.
