Don't know what the officiant should say at the ceremony

~Samazing, on March 5, 2011 at 3:15 PM Posted in Planning 0 14

So FH and I are being married by one of our close friends who is an ordained minister.

She hasn't done a whole lot of weddings, she had to be ordained for a job she had a while ago.. just in case..

Here's the thing though, neither one of us is religious.. and we don't want a religious ceremony.. so we are basically coming up with our own ceremony... the only thing is, I have only been to a few weddings ( when I was younger) and I don't know what kind of things should be said..

My friend isn't even sure what to say other than "Do you?.. Do you?.... alright... bars in the back" HAHA (she's joking of course... my mom and I were just about rolling on the floor as she was saying this with a total straight face Smiley tongue )

Does any one have any ideas as to what should be said... other than the vows? which we will be writing our own...

I'm just at a loss.. and I know it's still months away.. but seeing as how the first 4 months flew by.. I should probably start thinking about this

    Hi Samazing !

Congrats on the wedding !! The time will fly by !! We are getting married in August and I cant believe 4 mths (since us picking our date) have flown by already.

Our officiant gave us a package of information so we can basically "cut and paste" our ceremony together. What we want to say, when, etc. I cant wait to start doing that.

We arent religious at all !! and I was very adamant about not having that as part of our ceremony. I love that we have options

I will try to copy it all in an attachment and send it over to you if you would like Smiley smile

Let me know if you'd like it

    Thanks

    Amanda

Does your ordained friend have any other ordained friends that can give her some advice/coaching?

The book of common prayer has some marriage ceremonial stuff in it.

I offer civil (non-religious) ceremonies as well as traditional (little bit religious) ceremonies. Each ceremony is customized to the couple.

I don't know if your minister friend is comfortable with doing a civil ceremony -- you may want to find a civil officiant (check with your courthouse to see who is allowed to officiate).

There certainly are sample ceremonies online that you could put together. Give your officiant time to review it and make sure s/he is comfortable with it and that it would meet the legal requirements.

I'm in the same boat too! We're having our high school drama teacher become a minister for a day and marry us since that's how we met!

I'm not at all religious, and part of me wants to give a nod to Romeo and Juliet (the play we were in together). All of my friends now will laugh, since I turned out to be a stage manager, but I still think it would be cute.

This is the one I'm leaning towards so far, and I'll probably do some tweaking on my own: http://www.frugalbride.com/civilceremonysample1.html

Let rev. Google be your guide! There is tons of sample ceremony scripts, sample rituals, ceremonies, etc. that you can incorporate to your magical day. Or even so, you can do your own.... I personally loved on a wedding that I officiated where each of the couples sang to each other as their wedding vows (with chorus and everything). Best!

    Haley,

If you're still on here after all this time has passed I'd love for you to pass along to me any information about what the officiant should say. Thank you!

    Yes Haley,

If you are still on here, and still have what was said at your ceremony, I would love a copy. Thanks.
