Doing my own makeup?

Tagen, on May 11, 2022 at 2:35 PM Posted in Hair and Makeup 0 7

Is anyone else deciding to do their own makeup for their wedding? Did you love doing it yourself or do you wish you would have hired someone?

I think I have decided that I want to do my own due to the fact that I had a trial a few months ago and the girl was so nice and so personable, but I just really did not like the makeup when I thought I would! My MOH and I were talking about it (she had a trial as well with me) and she was explaining how it might be less stress free to do my own. She was explaining how if I did my own then I would at least have control of the end result and how it looks. I totally agree with her, but I keep going back and forth. I feel torn, I want to do my own because I know I won't have to stress about not liking it or not, but professionals are also professionals, and I don't want to regret not hiring one...

So, if anyone else has done their own and had a really good experience with it PLEASE let me know how you liked it!

I can't weigh in on this personally, but I recently saw a TikTok where a bride (who I think is a MUA too) did her own and regretted it. Even though she is a pro, she said she felt so nervous on her wedding day that her hands were shaky and it took her way too long/she didn't like how it came out.

I think if you are worried about not liking what another MUA does and you feel confident in doing your own, then go for it! I am hiring someone because when I do my makeup, I always think it looks fine until I see it in photographs and pick apart the details, lol.

I think this is one of those things where you really have to know yourself. I don't do much in the way of face makeup (foundation, concealer, blush, bronzer, etc.), but I'm sure I'll break out leading up to the wedding and want some kind of coverage, so I for sure want someone who knows what they're doing to do that rather than try to do it myself. If you know what you want and how to do it then power to ya! I'd also consider whether the weight of the day would impact your abilities to do what you want in the time frame you'll need to do it.

Was there something specific that you didn't like during your trial? You could go back (or go to someone else) and let them know that you want a, b, c but not x, y, z. You could also bring photos of what you like either from the internet or your own pictures to give them a better idea.

So, I LOVE makeup. I find it relaxing and creative, and I do my own for special events often. Even so, I didn't want to do my own makeup on my wedding day for these reasons:

Firstly, as Brittany said, you have absolutely no idea how you might feel on the day. You might be nervous, excited, stressed, shaky - and all of that might make it harder to do your own makeup. I personally find when I'm a bit anxious, it takes a LOT longer and I sometimes don't like the result, and I couldn't guarantee I wouldn't be a ball of nerves.

Secondly, I might be confident enough to do my own makeup, but some of my bridal party would not have been, and so I would have had to hire someone for them anyway. I didn't think it would be a particularly enjoyable experience watching them relax, having their hair and makeup done for them, while I sat somewhere off to one side, trying to do my own, and maybe becoming more stressed as time went on. I didn't want to end up wishing I'd hired the makeup artist for me as well, and thinking their makeup looked much better than mine - it wouldn't have been a very nice feeling to have on your wedding day.

I had my makeup artist do my engagement shoot as well as my trial, and so by the day of my wedding, she'd worked with my face a few times and refined the look I wanted, so I felt confident I'd get a look I liked.

Looking back, I wasn't super stressed on the day of, but it was such a relief being able to hand that responsibility of making me look beautiful over to someone else - because I was BUSY. I barely got to sit down at all. Someone wanted me for something so many times, it was wild. If I'd been trying to do my makeup at the same time as all of those interruptions I don't know what I'd have turned up looking like on the day, lol.

I did my own and it turned out great. I was 100% pleased with the results and I looks exactly how I wanted it to in the photos. The only thing I would say is make sure you pack all your makeup...I somehow forgot my lipstick back at the B&B across town. My sister's fiancé drove over and got it for me. That was the only stressful part. 😂

I’m actually doing 50/50! I am doing my own foundation/concealer because I hate cakey and heavy face makeup, but my artist is doing my eyes cheeks and lashes!

I am deferring to the skill of a MUA. I love glamming you but don’t want the pressure of doing it myself on that day.

Maybe you could arrive at a makeup trial already with the look you like. Then the artist could replicate this. Or you could do an engagement photo session to see how the pictures turn out. Sometimes highlights of features come out too extreme in the photo lighting.

Probably, if you are not doing glam, you would be fine.
