Doing my own makeup.

Squish, on February 16, 2014 at 10:41 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 13

Hi everyone,

I'm thinking of doing my own make-up for my wedding. I've always done my own make-up well. However! I want to high-light and contour my own face.. and I know I can learn how to do it by our wedding day. I went into Target to get products and start practicing, and then all of the questions hit me! If anyone knows the answers to these, please let me know! Or if you highlight and contour yourself and have suggestions for the best [drug store] products... the only expensive thing I own is MAC eye primer.

*I have lighter skin, blonde hair and blue eyes* Most tutorials I watch are on girls with tan skin and dark hair..

What color do I get for contouring, and is powder or cream better for staying powder?

The only contouring I've noticed is my friends who do drag (probably not what you want for your wedding) but http://www.reddit.com/r/MakeupAddiction/ is great for makeup advice and tutorials. They do lots of constructive critiques too, if you want to post your trials!

(Hope it's okay to like to another forum here)

I am thinking about doing my own makeup as well. I plan on getting a make up setter from Sephoria (a spray that runs about $30). I am going to practice before hand and take pictures to see how the makeup looks with a camera flash.

Allison the contouring thing is what Kim Kardashian and all of the famous people do to make their face a different shape, it's actually really popular but "normal" people haven't let the cat out of the bag until recently I guess! *or I've just been in the box too long*

And Theresa, there is a setting spray that the Disney Princesses use to keep their make-up staying put while in costume.. it's called .. Ben Nye final seal. I think you can get a 2-3 ounce bottle for like 5 bucks. It's supposed to be the greatest thing on the planet. lol. I just know you're not supposed to have any SPF in your make-up at all or it will cause flashback... I'm already pale enough. 8)

Getting some of this for myself.. http://www.sephora.com/all-nighter-long-lasting-makeup-setting-spray-P263504?skuId=1458173, but also having a friend doing my makeup. I want fake eyelashes, and they are brutal to apply by yourself.

It says "sold out" when I click on it. Smiley sad I actually got some setting spray from MAC over a year ago. It didn't work for me at all and made my face all greasy.. I'm hoping this Ben Nye stuff will work.. if the princesses use it, it should work for us peasants .. Smiley tongue

I learned to contour from youtube videos, honestly. However I found that they use way too much makeup for no reason. When you contour you are basically drawing a number 3 on the sides of your face (from temple - to cheek bone - to jaw line, and nose if you want). If you want don't want to wear too much makeup, this can be nicely achieved with just regular makeup, highlighter/concealer and bronzer. A good highlighter is by Rimmel it's in a tube, they should have it in target. Get a light bronzer, just a shade or 2 darker than your skin so you don't look over done. Invest in a good primer and a finishing spray or setting powder.

Go to YouTube. Search Jaclyn Hill contour video. She gives a very good in-depth tutorial on how to do it. She also does a great job at listing which products she uses.

None of the UD setting sprays worked for me. I have read phenomenal reviews from Model in a Bottle. I just placed an order on Amazon for some ($15 for 1.7oz). I have heard that it waterproofs, tear proofs, and sweat proofs your makeup for hours of flawlessness ;-) Be sure to also invest in a good photofinish face primer and eye primer. I will let you know how the MIB works in a few short days!

I am also doing my own makeup for my wedding. I've had makeup professionally done for formal occasions three times now, and I can humbly say that every time I end up walking out knowing that I could have done a better job myself. I am also very fair skinned and have blonde hair and blue eyes, and I'd say the first thing you need to do is establish whether you have warm or cool skin/hair tones - this'll definitely help determine what contour shades to look for. I use Smashbox Photo Finish liquid foundation and foundation primer (definitely a necessity) and I use Bare Minerals loose bronzer and highlighter to contour. In my experience, it blends well and lasts a long time over a liquid foundation, and I set everything with loose powder instead of doing a finishing spray. Also, if you're still deciding what to do for your eyes, I would HIGHLY recommend one of Urban Decay's Naked palettes (I just got Naked2 and LOVE it). Youtube and Pinterest are great resources for photo and video tutorials, but Lisa Eldridge's videos are my favorite! http://www.lisaeldridge.com/video/24954/bronze-contour-highlighter-look/#.UwJZkT-GeZQ

Karen: I've found that individual lashes rather than strip lashes are super easy to apply yourself and have a great look without being too overdone, and you can adjust how many you use on each eye to either tone-down or amplify the drama. Here's my favorite tutorial: http://www.lisaeldridge.com/video/1961/individual-fake-eyelashes/#.UwJYnz-GeZQ
