Dog Friendly Venue in Hawaii

Stacy, on March 16, 2018 at 5:04 PM Posted in Planning 1 8

Hi, I was wondering if I could get any tips. We are planning to have a destination wedding in Hawaii next March. We will be having about 40-50 guests and plan on renting out a villa/estate for our ceremony and reception. Ideally, it would be nice to house our guests, but this is not a priority. We are looking for a venue that has a grassy area and an ocean view. We are having trouble finding a venue that is dog friendly. She is a 3 year old, 18lb White Pekingese. Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Most airbnb, or vacation rental owners won't allow events or parties at their properties. Some also do not allow pets.

Most venues don't allow animals for various reasons, and liability issues. Is she good traveling, around lots of people? Weddings are loud, and can be extremely stressful to a dog. As good with people as my dog is, I don't want her at my wedding, I don't want to stress her out. She'll be at home, safe and sound sleeping in her bed with her blankie.

Thanks for your response. We will only have about 40 guests, and they all know her. She is good with people. I just need to find a venue that will accommodate her.

It's very difficult to get a dog into Hawaii from the mainland. Are you on the mainland? I am assuming so. They keep your dog at a Vet for days on end as Hawaii doesn't have rabies (I think). In short the Hawaiian govt tried very hard to keep outside germs away from in regards to plants and animals, so I would rethink this unless you live on an island already.

Check the laws for bringing dogs into Hawaii. I travel with mine frequently, but will not be bringing ours to our DW in Hawaii because they have quarantine rules for dogs. I’m not exactly sure how long, but I believe my fiancé said they quarantine dogs coming from the mainland for a week.

I am aware of the restrictions. I have read that as long as you turn in the necessary paperwork four months in advance, they have a direct release for dogs.

I think my friend's dogs had to either go through extensive vaccines at her local vet or be quarantined for 3 months in Hawaii when she moved there, it was no joke. By the time you'd get your dog through all of the vet appts you would spend less to board her or get a pet sitter at home.

Exactly! I’ve heard of it being a little more involved then what OP stated. I wouldn’t try it and it has to be rough on the dog. It’s not worth it.

The process of bringing a dog in without it having to go through any type of quarantine is very involved. Also, unless the dog is registered as an emotional support animal or a service dog, many airlines will ask that the dog be checked under the plane. Flying with flat faced dogs such as a Pekingese can be dangerous for the dog and some airlines will not even allow these types of breeds on long flights to Hawaii due to the risk. Not sure if it would be worth the risk/possible health issues for the dog.
