Does there have to be a unity candle?

I've only attended a few weddings and they were years ago, does there have to be some type of unity ceremony within in the wedding ceremony? That sounds really weird, lol but I hope someone has advice on whether it's needed or not. I've seen sandboxes and the unity cross but is this necessary?...

You cannot do it in some religious ceremonies. The Catholic and Episcopal Church only allow the use of approved liturgy for the ceremony, and unity ceremonies are fairly recent creations. I'm getting married in the Episcopal Church, so it was never an option for us, though I wasn't a huge fan of them anyway.
