Does the type of shapewear i want even exist?

Rosie, on November 9, 2021 at 7:39 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 1 18

So, I have bought a GIANT ballgown, and my main goal is to have the tiniest, most snatched waist possible. I own a corset, and can get down to about a 24.5 inch waist with it on, but it sits too high at the back to wear with my dress, plus I'm pretty sure the boning and the plackets at the front would be visible through, so it's out.

Thing is, most shapewear as far as I can tell isn't going to fit my measurements, and is also likely to be visible at the back.

I did look at shapermint as it seems to be suggested every time someone asks about shapewear, but my natural waist appears to be their size XS or S, whilst my hips and bust are closer to a S or a M. The problem being, if I get something that will fit my hips, it won't offer any waist reduction at all - their S or M waist measurement is as much as 1-5 inches bigger than my waist.

Essentially I'm not looking to smooth, I'm looking to WINCH! Do you have a favourite waist-focussed brand, and what kind of reduction does it give you? Or, would I be better off just asking my alterations lady to take the waist in as much as possible and not bother about an extra layer of shapewear since it's really only likely to smooth things out, not reduce?

I'm thinking this might be easiest. I might take the corset with me, so she can see what kind of reduction I am comfortable going to, and ask her to take it in as much as possible. After all, who needs to breathe, haha!

My initial though is to ask your seamstress. They may even be able to modify your corset or other shape wear. I haven’t used one, but have you tried a waist trainer?

I don't think they'd be able to modify the corset - or I certainly wouldn't be game - it was not a cheap one, haha!

I was looking at waist trainers! I'd be open to it, but I haven't found one that seems like it would be low enough in the back, plus they tend to have the little hooks and eyes down the front which I think would be visible through my dress. I guess I'm really wanting a pair of really high compression seamless shaping underwear or petticoat/slip.

My dress has a stretchy band around my waist underneath the fabric that hooks and just tightens everything in. Is that something you could see if your seamstress can add for you? Depending on the fabric they use it could work a bit more like a corset than just a stretchy band.

This is what I was going to suggest also! A lot of dresses have these waist bands sewn into them (I know pretty much all Justin Alexander dresses do). They really help cinch in your waist and don’t add visible lines or bulk.

Here is a picture of the one in my cousin’s Justin Alexander dress. It really sucked in her waist and gave her an hourglass figure

Another option could be to have your seamstress give you an internal corset

I would just have it taken in, its less stressful that way.

stress free is the way to be while planning.

Ah, I get it. I find online shopping for those items very difficult. Do you have a high end department store with a decent lingerie section?

    Just a thought: https://teamelitephysique.com/waisted-waist-trainer

Don't know how low your dress's back is, but this trainer was designed specifically to sit low/below the ribs.

Thank you! I will ask her about them. We haven't got to the sizing part of my fittings yet, but we are getting closer, and it is good to have plan to go in with!

I love the idea of an internal corset. I haven't seen that type of thing before, but I'm quite comfortable being held in that way, so I'm very open to it!

I do. I might need to try on some spanx or nancy gantz and see if I can get the level of cinch I want!

That is exactly the height I need! I think you might see the hooks at the front through though. I will bring the one that is too high to see it with the dress, and it if looks ok, I can always buy a lower one! Thank you for sharing!

I think this depends on the material of your dress.

If your dress is of a more delicate material, it might be worth it to see if your seamstress can custom tailor shapewear for you. I would worry that snatching the waist would put too much strain on the dress itself unless the material is really sturdy.

Sewing stretch fabric requires a different skillset than sewing non-stretch materials, so I would check with your seamstress first. Typically you'd buy a garment to fit your largest size measurement (hips) and have the other areas taken in and fabric removed, but with the forces that get applied to shapewear (and the fact that they are worn under garments and not seen) it might actually be easier to buy a size to fit your waist and then add a gusset to accomodate your hips.

If the dress material is pretty sturdy, then you may be able to just have the dress altered to fit tighter at the waist and cinch you down. I would think a corset style closure (whether hidden or visible) would be best.

It's a heavy mikado, and by the look of the sample when I bought it, can take quite a beating from people wearing it who are a little bigger than the size requires, me included, haha! I agree with you on your other points too!
