Does my florist proposal sound reasonable?

michelle, on July 26, 2017 at 11:43 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 22

I'm getting married in Big Sur, Ca in a private ceremony with just FH and I. I've found that everything I've booked so far has far exceeded the prices I had originally budgeted but I now understand that it's an expensive place to get married. I received a proposal from a florist today for some flowers for my hair, boutonniere and bouquet base on photos I sent for inspiration. My total, including tax, delivery fee(which is high since we're getting married in the forest) and the flowers is $735. I was willing to pay it but FH thinks it's outrageous so now I'm wondering if it really is too much.

I have no context on what wedding flowers cost so I'd love any opinions based on your experience with florists.

I should add that out of 8 florist I contacted she is only the one who answered and was available. Big sur is a small place so not a lot of options.

Thanks. I'm attaching my inspiration pics

Keep looking. Know what you want to spend and make them work for your budget. Search for places through wedding wire and some diy's.

Her works IS beautiful but I'm not sure it's one bouquet, one boutonnière and some hair flowers for almost a grand beautiful. Why delivery if it's only small stuff might I ask?

Wow those are beautiful inspo pics! I would continue looking - that price seems a little steep for the amount of flowers that you are requesting. Good luck!!

Exactly how much of that is the delivery fee?

Thank you for the responses. I think I just needed to see if people who have experience already thought it was unreasonable or not.

The florist only offers delivery, I guess to protect the flowers in transit

That's a lot for delivery unless she's driving over an hour

It probably is somewhere around an hour. Having never been to big sur I had no concept how far things are and I guess I chose a ceremony spot pretty far from everything. My HMU is charging $140 travel fee since it will be an hour each way and my officiant is charging a $75 travel fee. It's a good thing I have my heart set on big sur since I've found a lot of costs I didn't consider before. Luckily it will just be FH and I so we can afford it.

Girl if you can afford it and her work is that amazing go for it! It's not over the top expensive.

I'm not getting married near Big Sur but I am getting married in California so just for reference: my bouquet is $225, boutonniere $15, flower crown (for the flower girl) $35. So I'm at $275, but my bouquet is not as grand as yours, so that might add an extra $50-100 depending on the flowers you chose. Even adding $100 that would be around $375, which is a lot less than her quote of $585 (minus delivery, that charge seems reasonable to me).

If I couldn't find anyone else, I personally would do it because flowers are important to me even if I have to overpay.

That is a big bouquet! Can she do a smaller version? Are there other less expensive flowers she can recommended with similar coloring to save money?

It couldn't hurt to get a second opinion. Other florists in the area may charge even more (this is what I found when I shopped around. I thought I got an extremely high quote and it turned out to be the lowest in the area.) But you won't know until you shop around.

I would contact Globalrose or Fiftyflowers. They have flower packages that start at $200 and you will actually get more than just those few things.

That sounds a little high, but if she does beautiful work then I'd do it. Flowers were important to me and my bouquet was around $590 so I don't think your quote is too outrageous. It also depends if the flowers in your inspo pic are premium blooms, if their in season during your wedding, etc.

You can ask her to give you an itemized list of the price and see if you can switch some of the pricier stems for something cheaper, for example replacing peonies with garden roses can take off a few bucks for a similar look.

I was married in Carmel Valley this year and got quotes from quite a few vendors in the Carmel/Big Sur/Monterey area and I actually said out loud when I read your post, "that's cheap!" Haha it's such an expensive area. But most of the florists I spoke with actually had wedding minimums of $3000 or more so the fact that this person doesn't would have sounded great to me!

I really appreciate getting everyone's perspective and advice, it helps a lot. Like Kris10, flowers are incredibly important to me so I may end up booking her.

Lauren b. its great to get perspective about what flowers cost in the area. I didn't want to be cheap and not get them but I also don't want to over pay an outrageous amount.

Could anyone pick them up on the morning of the wedding for you? That would save you on the delivery fee

That seems really expensive for what you describe, but if flowers are really important, you should probably go for it. Costco has bouquet packages, most grocery stores do flowers, and etsy has some gorgeous dried flower bouquets as well if you end up needing to save money. Also Bouqs has some great options, $300 for the smallest package. https://s3.amazonaws.com/site.bouqs.com/company/weddings/WeddingCatalog_2017_%20PrePackaged.pdf
