Does anyone know how i could cut a raw-edge veil?

Elizabeth , on July 14, 2019 at 11:17 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 6
Hi all! I wasn’t originally planning to wear a veil, but last week I bought a cheap one on amazon last week just to see how it would look. It ended up being an EXACT match for my dress and I loved it. The problem is that it’s ridiculously long, my dress doesn’t have a train and I don’t want my veil to either. It’s a raw edge, basic tulle - is there a way to shorten it without paying a fortune? I’ve read that rotary cutters are best for getting a clean edge on tulle, but I have no idea how I’d do that as it’s 54” wide and the cutting mats cost a fortune at that size. Thanks in advance!

I would try cutting with sewing scissors at the very edge, meaning with a lot of extra length so you know you can get it cut off again if you mess up or hate it

There’s special scissors for cutting fabric, I would get those. I have a pair and they work great. Also, tulle doesn’t fray so it shouldn’t be too concerning. Good luck!

How would I keep it straight/still in order to make sure I cut the edge straight? I haven’t done anything with fabric since I broke a sewing machine in junior high home ec 😂

Couldn’t you bring it to the seamstress who is doing the alterations for your dress? If you’re not savvy with sewing and whatnot, I’m not sure I would recommend your veil to be the thing to learn on. If you’re trying to save the money by doing it yourself, I would ask around. Someone you know either knows how to sew or has a parent/grandparent who can, who would probably be able to do it very easily.

I’m sure I could, I just didn’t want to pay $50 to cut a $15 veil. Asking around is probably a good idea!
